Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, a center for national government, trade, and culture. 94.65% of its residents are Muslim. Islam arrived in the 13th century through trade and Sufi missionary activities. It has a rich heritage of around 2,000 buildings from the Mughal and British periods. Mosques in Dhaka represent its culturally rich heritage with vibrant motifs and intricate designs. Given below is a list of some popular mosques to catch your obligatory salah with the congregation at prayer times in Dhaka.
Completed in 1968, Baitul Mukarram is the national Mosque of Bangladesh. It is a vast, spacious complex with a capacity for over forty-two thousand worshippers at a time. The architecture is a marvel that awe-inspires visitors. While it is designed with modern architectural features, it preserves traditional Mughal practices as well. Its unique cube shape is modeled after the Kaaba of Makkah and is without a dome, differentiating it from other mosques in South Asia. The geometric archways inside the mosque contrast its cube exterior, making the mosque a sight to behold as you explore it. The mosque’s complex contains shops, offices, and libraries such as the Islamic Foundation Central Library.
Tara Masjid, Tara meaning star, is named after intricate star designs on its exterior. With Chinitikri mosaics and star motifs on its dome, the mosque has unique architectural designs. It was built in the early 19th century by Mirza Golam Pir, with additional renovation in the 20th century 1926 by a businessman named Ali Jan Bepari. Tara Masjid is popular among tourists who visit to marvel at its architectural designs and tilework, reminiscent of South Asian cultural heritage.
Also known as Guthia Mosque, Baitul Aman Jame Masjid was established on December 16, 2003. It is a popular tourist location, with several food stalls and facilities available within the complex. The mosque’s architecture is inspired by various architectural styles from the Middle East. There are twenty domes and a 58-meter-high minaret constructed with white marble. There are several calligraphies of Ayat ul Kursi adorning the inner walls of the mosque. The inner complex can hold around 1400 worshippers, while the outer courtyard has a capacity for 5,000 worshippers. The mosque complex has a madrasah (Islamic educational school) and an orphanage as well. It is called Marhuma Alhajj Maleka Begum Hafizia Madrasa & Orphanage.
Dhaka University Central Jame MAsjid is considered a renowned monument of historical significance and is located near the gravesite of Bengladesh’s national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam. It is a popular mosque among the students and teachers of the university who congregate at prayer times in Dhaka. There are separate facilities available for women at the mosque, according to the regular visitors. It can hold up to 5,000 worshippers at a time in its spacious interiors, adorned with Islamic calligraphy and designs. The mosque is a rectangle-shaped one-story building with 3 domes and 4 minarets on its roof.
Shat Gambul, Bengali for “sixty domes,” is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was built in the 15th century by the Sultanate of that time. The “Sixty Domes” has thick walls made from bricks. It is a distinctively Tughlaq style of architecture. The walls taper outward so that in case of an earthquake, the walls fall outwards in the field rather than inwards. It has four towers, of which two are used to call the adhan (call of prayer). Shat Gambuj actually has 77 low domes arranged in seven rows of eleven, with additional domes at the corners bringing the total to 81.
Located in a busy neighborhood of the capital, Dhaka, Bait Ur Rouf is an impressive example of modern Islamic architecture. Reminiscent of the traditional red brick construction practice, the mosque is a unique cylindrical building of a vast single prayer hall without windows. There are small pockets of openings throughout the exterior wall that let in light and wind, cooling down the column-free prayer hall while also lighting the interior with specks of light. The architect, Marina Tabassum, has also won an architecture award for her stunning modern architectural design of the mosque. It was completed in 2012 and has since become an international attraction due to its unique establishment.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has stressed the importance of congregating prayers several times with multiple hadiths narrating his words (Sahih al-Bukhari 645), as well as many narrations about his Sunnah of making sure to offer prayer in congregation (Sahih al-Bukhari 706). Following his (ﷺ) noble Sunnah, we as Muslims should also try our best to pray our obligatory prayers in congregation. Mosques are religious and community centers for Muslims all over the world. Muslims congregate at prayer times in Dhaka at these mosques, gathering in masses to keep alive a significant Islamic tradition. Catch your obligatory prayers with the congregation at any of these mosques if you find yourself in the vicinity!
