Mosques continue to raise the Adhan (call to prayer) at prayer times in Aleppo. This list of mosques will help you catch your daily obligatory prayers with the congregation while you are in Aleppo. Aleppo is an ancient historical city dating back over 8,000 years. It is considered among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it may have been inhabited since the sixth millennium BC. The ancient Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and several archeological sites prove the city’s history. The city of Aleppo is the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the most populous governorate of Syria. It has been a critical center for trade, culture, and civilization.
The city is known for its traditional olive oil soap, often called Aleppo soap in the region. There are several famous historic souqs (bazaar/market) around the city. Islam arrived in the region with 7th-century Muslim conquests and trade relations. The city currently has a predominantly Muslim population, with more than 80% of Aleppo's inhabitants being Sunni Muslims. The Syrian Civil War has deeply affected Aleppo, leading to widespread destruction of its cultural heritage and displacement of its population. Many mosques were damaged during 2012-2016. However, continuous efforts have been made to restore and rebuild the city to its formal glory.
Near the Old City of Aleppo, the Umayyad Mosque remains a steadfast reminder of the glory of Muslims during their rule in the region. It is the largest and oldest mosque in the region and is located near the entrance of Al-Madina Souq. To be more specific, it is located in al-Jalloum district of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a World Heritage Site near the entrance to Al-Madina Souq. The mosque is said to be the resting place of Zechariah (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the father of Yahya (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), both of whom are revered prophets in Islamic tradition. The current building dates to the 11th to 14th century. Unfortunately, the minaret did not survive the attacks from the Battle of Aleppo. While the mosque is damaged, it retains some beauty from its formal state and is worth visiting.
Al-Rahman Mosque is located on King Faisal Street in Aleppo Al-Shahba. It is renowned in the region for its colorful dome and has become a representative sight for Aleppo. The mosque was opened to the public in 1994 and was built with modern systems with traditional architectural foundations. It has a large central dome flanked by 2 tall minarets and 4 shorter rectangular minarets. The mosque's outer walls are decorated with stones in the form of traditional Quranic pages inscribed with some verses of Surat Al-Rahman. It consists of two identical floors, each with an area of 650 square meters, with each floor accommodating around 1,200 worshipers.
The Al Tawheed Mosque is located on Khalil Hindawi Street, to the right side of the Queiq River, in the Al-Aziziyah neighborhood. Neighboring several churches, the mosque shows the historic diversity within the region. The mosque has 4 tall minarets, a recognizable trait from a distance of its Islamic identity. It opened in 1981 and was built with a modern architectural style combined with Abbasid architecture.
Located in the prestigious neighborhood of Al-Sabil, Al Rawdah Mosque has become a landmark in Aleppo. The mosque was built in 1973 and has since become a beacon within the neighborhood for spiritual respite and worship. It has a renowned library at its facility.
Considered to have historical significance, Al-Darweesh Mosque is an old humble site in the west of the city of Aleppo. It is a quiet, humble, cool facility revered in the community. While no authentic information is available on its origin, it is considered by its regular attendees as archeological and historic.
For many local Syrians, Rashid Mosque is associated with emotional memories. The mosque is near the city’s government office in an educational district with several Maktab (bookstores). It neighbors a revered educational center of the city, Mashhad Hussein.
Formerly a souq, Mosque Imam Bukhari is home to a private educational institute and a mosque for the nearby worshippers. The mosque is a beautiful representation of Aleppo’s cultural and historic identity. With a yellow stone exterior and a single minaret, the mosque boasts the dignified steadfastness of the city against continuous destruction.
Congregational prayers hold immense importance in Islam and is an obligation on every able and healthy Muslim. Multiple hadiths testify to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), emphasizing that Muslims stand together in congregational prayers. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah will prepare for him who goes to the mosque (every) morning and in the afternoon (for the congregational prayer) an honorable place in Paradise with good hospitality for (what he has done) every morning and afternoon going.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 662)
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The mu'adhdhin will receive forgiveness to the extent to which his voice reaches, and every moist or dry place will testify on his behalf, and he who attends (the congregation of) prayer will have twenty-five prayers recorded for him and will have expiation for sins committed between every two times of prayer.” Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) (Sunan Abi Dawud 515)
We hope this list will help you find a nearby mosque to attend your obligatory prayers while in Aleppo.
