About Kinshasa, DR Congo

Kinshasa, formerly known as Leopoldville, is the largest city and capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kinshasa is situated alongside the Congo River. Historically, it was a fish trading site, which gradually turned into one of Africa's fast-growing and densely populated cities. It was declared as a City of Music by UNESCO in 2015.

Kinshasa is predominantly a Christian city, with more than 95% of the population following Christianity. Islam is a minority religion in this city, with less than 2% of the total population following Islam as their declared religion. Islam was introduced in Kinshasa through Arabian and African slave traders in the late 18th and early 19th Century CE. The local Africans were attracted by the traditions and culture of Islam brought to this region by the Muslim traders. This resulted in a gradual increase in the Muslim population in the region. However, during the European colonization era, the spread of Islam slowed down, resulting in a decline in the overall number of Muslims in the entire Congo.
