Kinshasa, formerly known as Leopoldville, is the largest city and capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kinshasa is situated alongside the Congo River. Historically, it was a fish trading site, which gradually turned into one of Africa's fast-growing and densely populated cities. It was declared as a City of Music by UNESCO in 2015.
Kinshasa is predominantly a Christian city, with more than 95% of the population following Christianity. Islam is a minority religion in this city, with less than 2% of the total population following Islam as their declared religion. Islam was introduced in Kinshasa through Arabian and African slave traders in the late 18th and early 19th Century CE. Masjid-E-Al Hidayat, is one of the popular mosques in Kinshasa, DR Congo. It is situated in the main city, near the Congo River. A couple of other famous mosques are also situated in its vicinity. Mosque Al Masoomeen is a Khoja Shia Isnasheri Mosque situated in Kinshasa. It is a beautifully constructed mosque with a Madrassa associated with it, which provides religious education to Muslim kids. Although Islam spread in Congo, including the city of Kinshasa, quite swiftly during the late 18th Century CE, it faced a hard time during the colonization by the Europeans, especially Belgian colonization. As of today, it is a majority-Christian city with Muslims in the minority. However, the Islamic cultural heritage can be seen in the architecture and literature, mostly in the shape of mosques and Islamic Religious Schools. No significant Islamic heritage site exists in Kinshasa, apart from mosques. Muslims of Kinshasa follow the Islamic traditions, mainly inherited from the Arabs, in their personal lives, especially while performing religious rituals. They follow the Shafi and Maliki Islamic Jurisprudence.
Despite being a minority in Kinshasa, DR Congo, Muslims have managed to establish a couple of organizations that are serving the Muslim Community in various sectors, such as education, women's development and healthcare. Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) has been actively working for the well-being of Women and Girls since 2019. It frequently holds workshops and seminars, highlighting the importance of women's participation in the overall development of an Islamic community in the DR Congo, including Kinshasa. Islamic Relief is a worldwide organization working for human development. They have specifically focused on DR Congo in recent years to work in collaboration with the local NGOs of Congo, including the Muslim Community Organizations. The purpose of this collaboration is to work for the development of the local communities (including the Muslim Community) on humanitarian grounds.
DR Congo is primarily a Christian Country, where Muslims are in the minority, less than 2% of the total population. In the Capital City of Kinshasa, Muslims are maintaining their religious identity by upholding Islamic traditions and religious obligations. Muslims in Kinshasa observe the mandatory fasting during the month of Ramadan. Similarly, they also celebrate Islamic festivals such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. There are no official holidays for any of the Islamic events. However, Muslims are free to avail a holiday on any of their religious festivals, such as Eid. This is a local arrangement in many public sector and private organizations.
