Here's a list of the best, most-visited mosques with prayer times in Abu Dhabi!
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and is the country's center of politics and industry. It is a major cultural and commerce center in the region. The city of Abu Dhabi is located on an island in the Persian Gulf, off the Central West Coast. It is surrounded by archaeological evidence from historical civilizations. Abu Dhabi's ruling family, Al Nahyan, originated from these historic lands. Apart from native Emiratis, the majority of the population is made up of migrant workers or expatriates from several countries such as Nepal, Pakistan, India, etc. Abu Dhabi is known for its majestic mosques, including Sheikh Zayed Mosque, one of the largest in the world. The mosques in Abu Dhabi are architectural marvels, showing the region's economic flourishing.
The world-famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque is a renowned architectural marvel attracting tourists from all over the world, including UAE. The grand mosque was constructed between 1994 and 2007 and was inaugurated in December of 2007. It is among the largest mosques in the world, with a cumulative capacity of 40,100 worshippers.
Embellished and accented with gold, the mosque features several columns with four main minarets. There are several domes around one main dome, a style seen in many Arabesque designs of mosques. The most attractive aspect of the mosque is its lunar illumination, a unique lighting system designed to reflect the phases of the moon. The exterior is made up of white marble, reflecting the light majestically, awe-inspiring the onlooker.
There are several facilities and programs available in the mosque; you can expect the following:
The website is excellently developed with e-services, such as digitalized sermons and visiting tickets.
Situated in an area that includes many churches of the Christian religion, this mosque is named Mary the Mother of Jesus, especially to promote tolerance and highlight the similarities between the two Abrahamic religions. Also known as Maryam Umm Eisa Masjid in Arabic, it was built in 1989 as Mohammed Bin Zayed Mosque. It was named after Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and was renamed later in 2017. It attracts Christians from the vicinity due to its unique name and many Muslims who love its peaceful environment. The Imam of the mosque is also beloved among the community for his humbleness and beautiful voice.
Near Delma Park stands a mosque attracting a diverse group of worshippers. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan Mosque is located in a quiet Abu Dhabi neighborhood. The community near the mosque comes from various backgrounds, including native Emiratis, Sudanese, Pakistani, Nigerian, and several other ethnicities. The mosque is a true example of the harmony and brotherhood between Muslims regardless of race or background. Constructed in an Arabesque style, the interior of the mosque is embellished in gold with elegant chandeliers, creating a majestic atmosphere for the worshippers. The recitation and voice of the Imam are another major attraction for the incoming worshippers.
Attracting a huge crowd for its Jummah prayers, Al Aziz mosque is a modern structural masterpiece and represents Islamic design innovation. The most recognized feature of the mosque is its unique calligraphy-etched wall featuring the Ninety-nine Names of Allah. The designer, Yasser Fouad, wanted the mosque to be a journey with faith and represented the core value of the mosque with its design. He used unique lighting to enhance the carved names of Allah on the stone facade to make it seem as if the walls recite the names of Allah along with the worshipper with each step he takes. The rest of the mosque has a pretty straight, modern design. (More on the architecture can be read here.)
Mohamed Bin Masood Masjid is a humble neighborhood mosque constructed in Arabesque design, with its facade reflecting the desert land it is surrounded with. The mosque features a single dome paired with a single minaret. The marble interior and well-lit space allow the worshipper to offer their prayers calmly. Located in a bustling area, neighboring a medical center, the mosque provides respite to the worshippers from the noisy outside world.
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said about men who strive to pray with the congregation, "He (the man going to prayer with the congregation) does not take a step without being raised a degree for it and having a sin remitted for it, till he enters the mosque, and when he is busy in prayer after having entered the mosque. The angels continue to invoke blessings on him as long as he is in his place of worship. Saying: O Allah, show him mercy, and pardon him!
Accept his repentance (and the angels continue this supplication for him) so long as he does not do any harm in it or as long as his ablution is not broken. (Sahih Muslim Book 5, Hadith 339) Congregational prayers hold immense significance in the Islamic tradition. Since the first mosque in Islam, Quba Masjid, mosques have continued to provide a space for Muslims to congregate and learn their deen to increase their Faith (Imaan). Every Muslim must strive to pray with the congregation. We hope this list helps you find mosques in your vicinity in Abu Dhabi.
