With 99.2% of the population in Baku being Muslim, people gather to offer prayers in mosques according to the prayer times in Baku daily. Various people from around the world visit Baku and its famous mosques, with the most popular being Heydar mosque.
Named after the founder of the Azerbaijani state, Heydar Aliyev, the Heydar Mosque is located in Baku, Azerbaijan, and is considered to be a remarkable mosque with great cultural significance. It is located in the Yasamal district, near the National Flag Square, making it accessible for Baku residents and tourists. Heydar Mosque is considered to be one of the largest mosques in Azerbaijan and can accommodate 10,000 worshippers at one given time. Muslims from diverse backgrounds and sects, both Shias and Sunnis, visit this mosque, and it is considered to be home to numerous Muslim communities.
This mosque offers daily prayers and also holds Jummah (Friday) prayers. Additionally, Heydar mosque offers various kinds of classes, such as Quran and weekend classes, along with Islamic studies. Apart from being a venue for religious activities such as the recitation of the Quran by religious leaders, Heydar mosque also provides Muslim students with financial aid and scholarships, which fosters a sense of community and belonging.
Dating back to the 12th century, Juma Mosque, located in the historic Icheri Sheher, is considered to be Baku’s oldest mosque. It has undergone multiple reconstructions and now features a beautiful design with a courtyard and a rectangular prayer hall. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Bin Abid undertook the task of decorating the walls of the Juma mosque with Quranic verses and the names of the five reversed members of the Ahl al-Bayt in Islam. Juma Mosque also serves as a hub for religious and cultural activities that occur in Azerbaijan, and it is mostly visited by Shia Muslims who gather here for congregation at prayer times in Baku.
The Bibi-Heybat Mosque is located six kilometers southwest of Baku in Azerbaijan, and this mosque is built over the tomb of the seventh Shia Imam-Musa Al Kadhim. Known as the ‘Mosque of Fatima,’ the Bibi-Heybat Mosque serves as a spiritual and religious center for Muslims of the region, especially Shia Muslims, and is considered to be one of the major monuments of Islamic architecture in the entire region.
Muhammad Mosque, also known as the Siniggala Mosque, was built in the 11th century in the Old City of Baku, Azerbaijan. Known as Siniggala, for the name of its minaret - Siniggla, which refers to ‘damaged tower,’ was built in 1079. Even though the minaret of the mosque was damaged throughout the 19th century, it was soon rebuilt and reconstructed. It is located in the Inner City of Baku, directly behind the Swiss embassy, and this mosque offers daily prayers and holds various kinds of religious events.
The Taza Pir Mosque is located in Baku, Azerbaijan, and is considered to be a historically significant religious site known for its intricate architecture and rich heritage. It consists of exquisite features such as elegant porticos, minarets, and calligraphy from the Quran. The building consists of two levels with a courtyard adorned with blue and white marble pillars, detailed wooden engravings, and intricate tilework. Muslims, especially Shia Muslims, gather in this mosque at the given prayer times in Baku and pray together. This mosque serves as a cultural and religious hub, with Muslims participating in various social and religious activities.
