Raižiai Mosque

The Raižiai Mosque in Raižiai village, Alytus County, Lithuania, is a valuable national monument of Lithuania's Islamic past. Founded in 1889, it is one of the few wooden mosques in Lithuania and, indeed, the sole one to continue operating during the Soviet period. This mosque remains a religious and cultural hub for the local Tatar Muslim community, which comprises approximately 500 people. As a testament to its historical and cultural significance, the mosque was declared a cultural heritage site in 1999.

The interior of the mosque features the oldest known minbar (pulpit) in Lithuania, dating back to 1686 and serving as a stunning relic from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth period. Two sundials were placed beside the mosque in 2010 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald: one displays local time, and the other shows the time in Grunwald, Poland. These improvements highlight the intertwined history of the Tatars and Lithuanians, as well as the enduring legacy of their shared past.
