Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria and is famous for its rich history, popular landmarks like Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and ancient Roman architecture. It has a total population of around 1.38 million people, of which 5% identify as Muslims. Islam is the second-largest religion in Bulgaria. 13% of the population follows Islam. Islam was introduced to Sofia and the rest of Bulgaria by the Ottomans in the 14th century. A small percentage of the local Bulgarian population converted to Islam during the reign of the Ottomans in Bulgaria. Muslim ethnic groups like Tartars and Turks immigrated to Sofia after the conquest and settled here for trade and commerce, further promoting the influence of Islam in the country.
The Ottomans invested in the development and beautification of Sofi. They built mosques and hammams across the city. Islamic ideology influenced the way of life in Sofia for 5 centuries, but in the late 19th century, Bulgarian nationalists overthrew the Ottoman hold in Bulgaria after the famous Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878). After Bulgaria secured its independence from the Ottomans, many Muslims left Bulgaria. However, a significant population of mostly Bulgarian-speaking Muslims remained in the country. These Muslims belong to the Turks, Pomaks, and Roma Muslim communities.
In the 1980s, the communist government of Bulgaria enforced a law that required Muslims to adopt Slavic names. The regime suppressed Muslim expression, prohibiting Muslims from practicing their religion freely. Fortunately, this regime was short-lived. In the late 1980s, Bulgaria became a democracy, and religious freedom was made possible for all. This was a time of revival – Mosques, such as the Banya Bashi Mosque, were reopened for the public, and the grand Mufti’s office was established in Sofia. While the Muslim population in Sofia is small compared to other areas in Bulgaria, Sofia remains a hub of Islamic heritage and activity in the country.

A mosque holds great significance in the lives of Muslims around the world, as it is a place where they learn about their religion and worship the only Creator. It offers them a peaceful place to offer their obligatory prayers following the Islamic tradition and provides them with an environment where they can worship without any distractions and connect with Allah. Let’s read about the mosques in Sofia, Bulgaria:
The Banya Bashi Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Bulgaria and was built in 1576 during Ottoman rule. A famous architect of the Ottoman at that time, Mimar Sinan, designed this mosque. Around 700 worshippers can pray inside the hall at one time. Muslims visit the mosque to offer their daily five times prayers, Friday prayers, Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, and the two Eid prayers. The mosque organizes religious conferences, workshops, and lectures to encourage awareness about Islam. The mosque has a madrasah that offers various short courses for Muslim children and adults. These include Arabic language, Quran reading and memorization, tajweed, Islamic jurisprudence, and seerah courses.
The Banya Bashi mosque is a remnant of the Ottoman Empire. It is a beautiful specimen of the splendour of their architecture. It is a red-brick building with a courtyard, a white dome, and a tall minaret. The interior is designed beautifully in maroon, blue, and golden Islamic patterns, mosaics, and calligraphy. The grounds of the mosque have a fountain, and beautifully ornate circular windows adorn the prayer halls. Guided tours of the mosque are available.

Islam was introduced in Sofia back in 1382, during the time when the Ottoman Empire was expanding and captured Bulgaria, making it part of their empire. During the Ottoman rule, Sofia served as a military hub and an administrative center for the Turks, and their soldiers, administrators, and traders started settling in the city. During that time, Sofia became a center of Islamic culture and architecture, and many mosques, schools, and other public buildings serving the Muslim population were established. During the rule of the Ottomans, there were around 45 mosques in the city, and uncountable madrasas and Islamic institutions. But after the fall of the Ottoman empire, all these mosques ceased leaving Banya Bashi the only mosque operational in the city where the Muslims could freely offer prayers and worship according to their religious needs.
The Muslims make up only 5% of the population of Sofia, and to cater to this small number, for now, there is only one primary Islamic organization called Grand Mufti’s Office, which is the religious authority for the Muslim community in the country. It oversees everything, including Mosques, education, and community services. The main mosque of the city, Banya Bashi, is also operated by the Gran Mufti’s office, ensuring all the needs of Muslims, be it religious, financial, or emotional needs are fulfilled.
