They ask you about menstruation. Tell them: "This is a period of stress. So keep away from women in this state till they are relieved of it. When they are free of it, you may go to them as God has enjoined. For God loves those who seek pardon, and those who are clean."

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (they question thee (o muhammad) concerning menstruation) this was revealed about abu'l-dahdah who asked the prophet (pbuh) about it. allah said to his prophet: they ask you about sexual intercourse during menstruation, (say) o muhammad: (it is harmful) it is filth and unlawful, (so keep away from women at such time) so refrain from having sexual intercourse during menstruation (and go not unto them) do not have sex with them (till they are cleansed) of menstruation. (and when they have purified themselves) and have had a major ritual ablution (ghusl), (then go in unto them) you may have sex with them (as allah hath enjoined upon you) as you were dispensed to do before, i.e. penetration ought to be in the pudendum. (truly allah loveth those who turn unto him) those who repent of transgression (and loveth those who have a care for cleanness) those who have a care for turning away from transgression and filth.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : they will ask you about the monthly period, that is, menstruation and the spot in which it occurs, and how should one treat women during it. say: ‘it is an ailment, filth, or the place whence it issues is so; so part with women, refrain from sexual intercourse with them, in the monthly period, in this time, or in the part affected; and do not approach them, for sexual intercourse, until they are pure (yathurna, or yattahharna: the original tā’ [of yatatahharna] has been assimilated with the tā’), that is, until they have cleansed themselves after its cessation; when they have cleansed themselves, then come to them, in sexual intercourse, as god has commanded you’, by avoiding it, the female organ, during menstruation and not resorting to any other part. truly, god loves, that is, he rewards and honours, those who repent, of sins, and he loves those who cleanse themselves, from impurities.

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi

تفسير : (they question thee (o muhammad) concerning menstruation….) [2:222]. abu 'abd al-rahman muhammad ibn ahmad ibn ja'far informed us> muhammad ibn 'abd allah ibn muhammad ibn zakariyya> muhammad ibn 'abd al-rahman al-daghuli> muhammad ibn mishkan> hayyan> hammad> thabit> anas who said: “the jews used to banish women in their menstruation out of the house and refrain from eating, drinking and having sex with them. the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, was asked about this, and as a response allah, exalted is he, revealed (they question thee (o muhammad) concerning menstruation. say: it is an illness, so let women alone at such times and go not in unto them till they are cleansed…)”. this was narrated by muslim from zuhayr ibn harb from 'abd al-rahman ibn mahdi from hammad. abu bakr muhammad ibn 'umar al-khashshab informed us> abu 'amr ibn hamdan> abu 'imran musa ibn al-'abbas al-juwayni> muhammad ibn 'ubayd allah ibn yazid al-qarduwani al-harrani> his father> sabiq ibn 'abd allah al-raqqi> khusayf> muhammad ibn al-munkadir> jabir ibn 'abd allah> the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, that he said regarding (they question thee (o muhammad) concerning menstruation): “the jews used to say: 'whoever penetrates his wife from a back position, the child born to them as a result of this intercourse would be born cross-eyed'. because of this, the women of the helpers did not let their husbands penetrate them from a back position. a group of them went to see the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, and asked him about having sex with their wives while in their period of menstruation and also about the claim of the jews. allah, glorious and exalted is he, revealed therefore (they question thee (o muhammad) concerning menstruation. say: it is an illness, so let women alone at such times and go not in unto them till they are cleansed. and when they have purified themselves…), i.e. by performing a major ritual ablution (and when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as allah hath enjoined upon you) i.e. from the front (truly allah loveth those who turn unto him, and loveth those who have a care for cleanness. your women are a tilth for you (to cultivate) so go to your tilth as ye will…) because it is in the tilth that the child will grow and it is from there that it will come out”. some qur'anic exegetes said: “when a woman was in her period of menstruation, the pre-islamic arabs used to refrain from eating, drinking with her and also from staying with her in the same house, exactly as was the habit of the magians. abu'l-dahdah asked the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, about this saying: 'o messenger of allah! what should we do with women when they are in their menstruation?' as a response, allah, exalted is he revealed this verse”.
