Surah

Surahs are the chapters of the Quran. Each Surah is further divided into ayah, the verses of the Quran. There are 114 Surahs in the Quran, and each Surah has a unique name and theme. The division of Surah was done by the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) as communicated to him by Jibril (A.S). The organization of the Surahs is "Tauqifi," which means that no human is allowed to rearrange the order of the Surahs as RasoolAllah organized the verses into Surah himself as directed by Allah. Muslim and Quran provides you with a list of each Surah with its name, the number of ayah it contains and whether it is Makki Surah or Madini Surah. This helps you access Surah with ease, mark your progress, and revisit any specific chapter or ayah. Below is a list of the 114 Surahs of the Quran.

Surah of the Quran

Quran is divided into 30 juz, and each juz has one or more Surahs in it. The first juz has two Surahs in it, Surah Al Fatiha and Surah Al Baqarah, while the last juz has 37 Surahs (chapters) in it. The Surahs are divided into ayahs or verses, and each ayah has its own number. The longest Surah in the Quran is Surah Al-Baqarah, consisting of 286 ayahs (verses). It starts from the first juz and ends halfway into the third juz. On the other hand, the shortest Surah is Surah Al-Kawthar, found in the last juz of the Quran, consists of only three ayahs (verses).

Organization of the Quran in Surah

Initially, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad memorized the ayahs of the Quran as they were revealed to the Prophet. Some recorded them on leaves, animal skin, pieces of cloth, and other such rudimentary parchment alternatives. Later, under the Khilafat of Hadrat Abu Bakr (R.A.), it was compiled in the form of a book after 12 Hafiz (those who memorized the Quran) were martyred by their enemies. The arrangement of the Quran according to Surahs and ayahs was made in the time of the Prophet (S.A.W) under the guidance of angel Jibril (A.S), who was responsible for bringing down the Quran upon the Prophet (S.A.W). So, doubting the structure of the Quran and its verses is not an option under any circumstances, as it is done by the author of the book Himself.

Rewards for Reciting the Quran

Reciting the Quran has great rewards for Muslims. Every word recited from the Book of Allah earns you a reward that raises your spiritual levels, guides you towards the right path, softens your heart, and will also intercede on behalf of you on the Day of Judgement. Quran recitation like that of Surah Rahman and Surah Fatiha is also done to gain back health.

The best practice is to not only recite the Quran but also go through its translation and tafseer. This will help you know what’s written in the Quran, and you will not only gain knowledge but also guidance and rewards. Narrated by Abu Huraira (R.A) that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said: “ …and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur’an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them, and the angels would surround them, and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him…” (Sahih Muslim 2699a, Book 48, Hadith 48).
