Read the translation of Surah Waqia in English, Urdu, or any other language of your choice. Surah Al Waqi'a (الْوَاقِعَة) is the 56th Surah of the Quran, situated in the 27th Juz (Para), immediately after Surah Ar-Rehman, of the Holy Quran. The Surah is 96 verses and 3 ruku' long and is a Makki Surah. Surah Waqi'a takes its name from its very first verse, إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ  (when what is to happen, comes to pass). The Arabic al-Waqi'a (الْوَاقِعَة) translates to 'The Event' or 'The Inevitable'. Both these meanings of the word Al Waqi'a are equally applicable in this Surah. The concept of life hereafter is inevitable. Similarly, it implies that the day of Judgement will definitely happen.

Surah Waqi'a was revealed as a warning from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) to the non-believers who disregarded the Day of Judgement and raised suspicions regarding the Holy Quran. This Surah explains the truth about the Day of Judgement and the concept of Tawheed in addition to nullifying the disbelievers' suspicions towards the Quran. The subject matter of Surah Al Waqi'a is a continuation of Surah Ar-Rehman. In Surah Ar-Rehman, rewards for believers are discussed, whereas, in Surah Al Waqi'a, the life hereafter is discussed in detail.

Surah Al Waqi'a Asbab al-Nuzul (Context and Historical Background)

Surah Al Waqi'a (الْوَاقِعَة) was revealed during the Prophet's (ﷺ) stay in Mecca, some 7 years before he migrated to Medina. The subject and theme of this surah correspond to the early phases of the Prophethood, where the main emphasis was to invite the people towards the righteous way of life, belief in the Oneness of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ and the consequences they might face in the life hereafter if they don't follow the Divine Message.

Surah Al Waqi'a (الْوَاقِعَة) describes the consequences of the acts and deeds of a person. The consequences of their deeds in this world will decide their fate on the day of resurrection. The surah narrates that the whole of mankind would be divided into three categories. The first category is mentioned as "the Foremost." The other two categories are given the names "the Companions of the Right" and "the Companions of the Left."

The first category, "the Foremost' are those who are highly blessed and are the best of the best. The majority of the Quran commentators are of the view that Prophets, saints, martyrs, and highly truthful persons may fall into this category. The Companions of the Right are those who have committed more righteous deeds. They will be seated on the right side of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ on the Day of Judgement and will be given their fates in their right hand, which means that they will have to be sent to paradise. In contrast, the Companions of the Left are those who committed sins in this world. They will be on the left side of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ on the Day of Judgement. They will be given their fates in their left hands, which means that they will have to be sent to hell.

Surah Al Waqi’a - Makki Surah

Surah Al Waqi’a is a Makki surah. It was revealed well before the migration of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ to Medina. It is believed that it was revealed around 7 years before his migration. Some of the scholars are of the view that some of the verses of this surah might have been revealed after migration. Some of them believe that verses 39 and 40 were revealed in Medina. Some others believe that verses 81, 82, and 83 of this surah were revealed during the Prophet's stay at Medina. However, the general consensus is that Surah Al Waqi'a is a Makki Surah.

Significance of Surah Al Waqi'a

Surah Al Waqi'a is an important surah of the Quran. It narrates the importance of believing in the Day of Judgement. It speaks about the life after death. It also narrates the importance of believing in monotheism (Tauheed). The surah also refutes the suspicions of the non-believers about the Quran. It was revealed during the earlier phase of the Prophethood; hence the main subject of the surah is about the basic teachings of Islam, inviting the non-believers to avoid wrongdoings and sins. The consequences of wrongdoings are also narrated in this surah, saying that their destination will be Hell. Simultaneously, the fate of the believers is also specifically mentioned, giving them good news of their place in paradise.

Themes and Subject Matter of Surah Al Waqi'a

The main theme of the surah is the life after death and Tauheed (Oneness of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The non-believers of Mecca are unable to accept the Day of Resurrection. They did not believe that this could happen. So, the Surah Al Waqi'a narrates the scenario when the Day will come. It narrates that this entire Universe will come to an end. The mountains will be shattered into pieces, and most importantly, every human being will be resurrected on that Day of Judgement.

The scenario of the Day of Judgement is also mentioned specifically in this surah. It is explicitly mentioned that every living being will be handed over their records (what they had done in their life, good or bad, everything). The fate of the entire mankind is described in detail by dividing them into three categories, "the Foremost," "the Companions of the Right," and "the Companions of the Left."

The first two verses describe the inevitability of the Day of Judgement. The next five verses specifically describe the harshness of that Day. Verses 8 to 11 describe how the mankind will be divided into three groups. Verses 12 to 39 explicitly mention the rewards and benefits for those who will be sent to paradise due to their righteous deeds. In the next few verses, the fate of the disbelievers, the hell, is described in detail, mentioning the hardships they will have to face there.

In verses 57 to 73, the Divine Authority about resurrection is explained. Then, the Divinity of the Quran is established in the next verses. Finally, in the last verses, people are encouraged to believe in the Oneness of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, as they cannot avoid their death and resurrection on the Day of Judgement.
