Juz

The Quran is divided into thirty parts of varying lengths, each of which is called a juz. In Arabic, Juz is written as جُزْءْ. In Iran and the Sub-continent, it is also known as Parah, a Persian word written as پَارَه. There are 30 juz in the Quran, also known asسِپَارَہ sipārah (in Persian, si means 30) (thirty parts). The division of the Quran into juz (pl Ajza) has no relevance to its meaning.

Every Juz is named after the first word of the first verse of the Juz. Each Juz is subdivided into two parts: Hizb, the literal meaning of Hizb is two groups, and the plural is Ahzab. In total, there are 60 Hizb in the Quran. Each Hizb is subdivided into Maqra, four quarters, making 8 quarters per Juz. There are 240 Maqras in the whole Quran. The literal meaning of Maqra is reading.

Now, the question arises: Why was the Quran divided into Juz?

The Quran was divided into Juz to facilitate and ease Muslims. During medieval times, when it was too costly for most Muslims to purchase a manuscript, copies of the Qurʼān were kept in mosques and made accessible to people; these copies frequently took the form of a series of thirty parts (juzʼ).

Some people use this division of the Quran for memorization. Memorizing the Quran is a great virtue, as explained by a hadith narrated by  Abu Hurairah

The Prophet () said: "The one who memorized the Qur'an shall come on the Day of Judgement and (the reward for reciting the Qur'an) says: 'O Lord! Decorate him." So he is donned with a crown of nobility. Then it says: "O Lord! Give him more!' So he is donned with a suit of nobility. Then it says: "O Lord! Be pleased with him.' So He is pleased with him and says: "Recite and rise up, and be increased in reward with every Ayah.'" (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2915)

In Sahih Bukhari, there is another hadith narrated by Hazrat Uthman

The Prophet () said, "The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."
