At-Tour (ٱلطُّور)

At-Tour is the 52nd chapter or surah of the blessed Quran. At-Tour (the mountain/mount Sinai) is positioned in the juz or parah number 27, and the surah has a total of 49 verses. The surah starts with Allah taking an oath swearing by the mount, which many Muslims believe to be Mount Sinai, also known as Jabal Musa – a mountain on the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt where the Tawrat (Torah) was revealed to Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. The surah takes its name from the first verse of the surah: وَالطُّوْرِ۝۱ۙ [Translation: By the Mount (of Revelation)].

The subject matter analysis concludes that the surah was revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ) in the same stage of his life in Makkah when surah Adh-Dhariyat was revealed. The theme of the surah hints at the false accusations and objections from the disbelievers that the Prophet (ﷺ) had to struggle with while trying to convey the message of Islam and peace.

Subject Matter and Theme of At-Tour (الطُّور)

The first section of the surah emphasizes the topic of the hereafter. The reality and inevitability of the day of resurrection, which was already discussed in surah Adh-Dhariyat, have been repeated in surah Tour. However, it has been explicitly stated that the hereafter will surely come in due time, and no one has the power to prevent its occurrence except Allah. The fate of those who deny the signs and realities of the hereafter and how they will be held accountable and punished has also been mentioned in the surah.

On the other hand, Allah has good tidings for believers and those who persevere. In the 17th verse of the surah, Allah states:

اِنَّ  الْمُتَّقِيْنَ فِيْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّنَعِيْمٍ۝۱۷ۙ

Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatin wanaAAeemin

As to the Righteous, they will be in Gardens and in Happiness-

The surah further elaborates that for those who are just and obey their Lord, Allah has prepared unimaginable rewards. Those who believe in Him and follow the path of righteousness and good will be blessed and prevented from punishment and hellfire. In the latter section of the surah, the chief of the Quraish has been addressed, and his harsh behaviour towards the peaceful message of the Prophet (ﷺ) has been criticized. Their wrongdoings of ridiculing, mocking, and insulting the prophethood have been discussed, along with how the Quraish would gather together to come up with a mission that would end the message of the Prophet (ﷺ) has also been deemed wrong.

Allah explains how showing these people any miracle of the Prophet's (ﷺ) prophethood would be fruitless as the disbelievers are ignorant and stubborn and would misinterpret any signs they were shown merely to avoid believing in the message of righteousness. At the beginning and end of the surah, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was encouraged to continue with his mission of spreading Allah's message to the people despite what the disbelievers may say. He has been advised to remain steadfast and patient until the day Allah's judgment befalls those who do wrong and refuse to believe in the truth even when it is right in front of them.

Surah At-Tour also briefly discusses the perks of heaven the believers and God-fearing will be met with, and they will be provided with an abundance of blessings such as meat, fruit, and other desirable things, while the disbelievers and those who mocked the message of Islam will meet their fate in the hellfire.

Virtues and Benefits of Surah At-Tour (الطُّور)

While there are no specific benefits attributed to the recitation of surah At-Tour, we can be assured that its recitation is beneficial for us. Recitation and reading of Surah At-Tour will help protect Muslims from hellfire.

"Read the Qur'an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection." – Riyad-as-Salihin 991

Reciting the Quran also provides tranquillity and peace for one's heart and mental peace.

"Those who believe and find peace in their hearts from the contemplation of God: Surely there is peace of heart in the contemplation of God!" (13:28)

Allah also says in Surah Al-Isra:

"What We have sent down of the Qur'an is a healing and a grace for the faithful, and adds only loss for the sinners." – (17:82)

The above-mentioned verse also highlights the countless benefits and blessings reading the Quran bestows upon a believer. Apart from helping gain repentance from Allah, the Quran also helps heal one's mind and soul.
