20 - Ta-Ha

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ اِلٰى مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِہٖۗ اَزْوَاجًا مِّنْہُمْ زَہْرَۃَ الْحَيٰوۃِ الدُّنْيَا۝۰ۥۙ لِنَفْتِنَہُمْ فِيْہِ۝۰ۭ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَّاَبْقٰي۝۱۳۱
Wala tamuddanna AAaynayka ila ma mattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum zahrata alhayati alddunya linaftinahum feehi warizqu rabbika khayrun waabqa

Ahmed Ali

Do not covet what We have granted myriads of people of the pomp and glitter of this world to tempt them. The means your Lord has given you are better far and more enduring.

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (and strain not your eyes) do not look out of desire (towards that which we cause some wedded pairs) men (among them) among the people of banu qurayzah and banu'l-nadir (to enjoy) wealth, (the flower of the life of the world) the adornment of this worldly life, (that we may try them thereby) that we may try them with that adornment which we have given them. (the provision of thy lord) paradise (is better and more lasting) than that which they have in this worldly life.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : and do not extend your glance toward what we have given to some pairs, [certain] categories, among them to enjoy, [as] the flower of the life of this world, its adornment and delight, that we may try them thereby, [to see] if they transgress [the bounds]. and your lord’s provision, in paradise, is better, than what they have been given in this world, and more enduring, longer lasting.

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi

تفسير : (and strain not thine eyes…) [20:131]. ahmad ibn muhammad ibn ibrahim al-tha‘labi informed us> shu‘ayb ibn muhammad al-bayhaqi> makki ibn ‘abdan> abu’l-azhar> rawh> musa ibn ‘ubaydah al-rabdhi> yazid ibn ‘abd allah ibn qusayt> abu rafi‘, the client of the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, who reported that a guest dropped by the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, and so he summoned me and asked me to go to a jewish man who sold food. he entrusted me to tell him: “muhammad, the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, has received a guest and does not have what to offer him for food. could you sell me such-and-such measure of ground wheat or lend me some food which i will repay at the appearance of the moon of rajab”. the jew said: “i will not sell him or lend him except in exchange for a security”. i went back to the prophet, allah bless him and give him peace, and when i repeated what the jew had said, he exclaimed: “by allah, i am trustworthy in heaven as i am trustworthy on earth. had he sold to me or lent me, i would have paid back. take my armour as security”. this verse was revealed to consol him about this world (and strain not thine eyes toward that which we cause some wedded pairs among them to enjoy, the flower of the life of the world, that we may try them thereby…).

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : nor extend your gaze to what we have given to some pairs among them to enjoy [as] the flower of the life of this world…he said:that is, ‘do not direct your attention to that which results in the whispering of satan, opposition(mukhālafa) to the all-merciful, cravings (amānī) from the lower self, or acquiescence (sukūn) in what is familiar to one’s [basic] nature (ṭabʿ)’; for each one of these is among the things which cut a person off from the remembrance (dhikr) of god, mighty and majestic is he.his words, exalted is he:
