٣٩ - ٱلزُّمَر

39 - Az-Zumar

اَنْ تَـقُوْلَ نَفْسٌ يّٰحَسْرَتٰى عَلٰي مَا فَرَّطْتُّ فِيْ جَنْۢبِ اللہِ وَاِنْ كُنْتُ لَمِنَ السّٰخِرِيْنَ۝۵۶ۙ
An taqoola nafsun ya hasrata AAala ma farrattu fee janbi Allahi wain kuntu lamina alssakhireena

Lest a soul should say: "Alas, I was heedless of God and only laughed;"

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (lest any soul should say) so that no soul should say: (alas, my grief) i am remorseful (that i was unmindful of allah) that i have left the obedience of allah, (and i was indeed among the scoffers) and i was indeed among those who mocked the scripture and messenger!

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : so apply yourselves to this, before any soul should say, ‘alas for me (yā hasratā is actually yā hasratī, meaning ‘o regret of mine’) for what i have neglected of my duty to god, in other words, [of] obedience to him. indeed (wa-in: in is softened in place of the hardened form, in other words [understand it as] wa-innī) i was among those who ridiculed’, his religion and his book;

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : lest any soul should say, ‘woe is me for what i have neglected of [my] duty to god!...’he said:[that is, lest any soul should say], ‘i was preoccupied by the present world (ʿājil al-dunya), the pleasure of passion (ladhdhat al-hawā) and with going the way of the lower self. i neglected [my] duty to god, that is, with regard to god’s person (dhāt allāh), [and i neglected] being intent upon him (qaṣd ilayhi), and dependent upon him (iʿtimād ʿalayhi), on account of my neglecting to observe his rights (ḥuqūq) and adhere to his service (khidma).’his words, exalted is he:
