Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (and the dwellers in the wood) the people of shu'ayb denied shu'ayb, (and the folk of tubba') tubba' was the king of himyar. his name was as'ad ibn malkikarb, and his agnomen was abu karb and he was called tubba' because of the huge number of his followers (atba'); he was also a person who surrendered to allah: (every one) of these folk (denied their messengers) just as your folk, the quraysh, denied you, (therefore my threat took effect) and therefore my punishment and torment were enjoined upon them when they denied the messengers.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : and the dwellers in the wood, a small forest — the people of shu‘ayb — and the people of tubba‘ — a king [who ruled] in yemen; he had submitted [to god] and had summoned his people to [the same] submission [to god], but they denied him. each, of those mentioned, denied the messengers, as [your tribe] quraysh have, and so my threat became due, the sending down of chastisement on all [of them] became incumbent, so do not be anguished by quraysh’s disbelieving in you.
