71 - Nouh

قَالَ نُوْحٌ رَّبِّ اِنَّہُمْ عَصَوْنِيْ وَاتَّبَعُوْا مَنْ لَّمْ يَزِدْہُ مَالُہٗ وَوَلَدُہٗۗ اِلَّا خَسَارًا۝۲۱ۚ
Qala noohun rabbi innahum AAasawnee waittabaAAoo man lam yazidhu maluhu wawaladuhu illa khasaran

But they did not listen to me," Noah said, "and followed him whose wealth and children only added to his ruin.

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (noah said: my lord!) o my lord! (they have disobeyed me) regarding repentance and faith in allah's divine oneness (and followed) and obeyed (one whose) abundant (wealth and children increase him in naught save ruin) in the hereafter; this refers to the chieftains of his folk;

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : noah said, ‘my lord, they have disobeyed me and followed, that is, the riffraff and the paupers [among them have followed], those whose wealth and children, namely, their leaders who have been blessed with such things (read wulduhu or waladuhu, ‘whose children’, the first of which is said to be the plural of walad, similar [in pattern] to khasab, khushb, or in fact [it is said to be] of the same meaning [as walad, but an alternative form] as in the case of bukhl or bakhal, ‘niggardliness’), only add to their loss, [to] their insolence and disbelief.
