Definition/Meaning of Al-Muhyi

The literal meaning of Al-Muhyi is the one who gives life and maintains it. Other meanings are the bestower of life, the reviver, and the sustainer of life. It also encompasses that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has created us and breathed a soul into our body. He will cause us to die, take the soul out of the body, and then revive us on the day of judgment.

The root word of Muhyi is ha-ya-ya (ح ي ي). It has four classical Arabic connotations:

  • The first meaning is to be living or to live.
  • The second meaning is to become apparent and distinct.
  • The third meaning is to revive, vitalize, and call into being.
  • The fourth meaning is to be sound, to be whole and complete.

This root has appeared 128 times in the Quran. It has been used in twelve derived forms. Some of the examples are as follows:

  • يحيى (Gives Life)
  • حيّان (Alive)
  • يا حياتي (The life)

All these meanings collectively make us understand the essence of Al-Muhyi. He is the one who causes something to live, sustains life, and creates all the means to support life until life comes to an end. Then He will regenerate us on the day of resurrection, and it's easy for Him because He has created us for the first time without any role model, and it is easier for Him to repeat our creation a second time.

In Surah Ar-Rum Verse 20-27, Allah reminds us of His signs and states the whole process of life. In the end, He summarises our whole life by His signs and says that these signs are reminders for us to reflect upon Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). In the end, we will return to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), and He will recreate us on the day of judgment.

One of His signs is that He created you from dust, then—behold!—you are human beings spreading over the earth. And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find comfort in them. And He has placed between you compassion and mercy. Indeed, in these are signs for people who reflect. And one of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and colours.

Indeed, these are signs for people who listen. And one of His signs is that He shows you lightning, inspiring you with hope and fear.  And He sends down rain from the sky, reviving the earth after its death. Indeed, these are signs for people who understand. And one of His signs is that the heavens and the earth persist by His command.

Then, when He calls you out of the earth just once, you will instantly come forth. And to Him belong all those in the heavens and the earth—all are subject to His Will. And He is the One Who originates the creation and then will resurrect it—which is even easier for Him. To Him belong the finest attributes in the heavens and the earth. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise

Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things. He is ordered to write down his (i.e., the new creature's) deeds, his livelihood, his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion).
