Al-Wajid Meaning & Definition

One of Allah’s (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎ majestic attributes is Al-Wajid. Al-Wajid means He who does not need anything nor is deprived of anything. This name highlights Allah’s (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎ resourcefulness and capability of obtaining whatever He wills.

The Arabic root for Al-Wajid is wow-jeem-daal (و ج د), which has the classical meanings of discovering or finding, obtaining what was pursued, becoming aware, experiencing, perceiving, gaining or possessing property, wealth, or resources, acquiring abundance, and existing without wants.

This name of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎ is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran. However, it is still an accepted attribute of the All-Mighty and certain verses of the Quran describe this quality of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), such as:

وَوَجَدَكَ ضَآلّٗا فَهَدَىٰ

وَوَجَدَكَ عَآئِلٗا فَأَغۡنَىٰ

And He found you lost and guided [you]

And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient. (Quran 93:7-8)

Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, “This is from Allah “; and if evil befalls them, they say, “This is from you.” Say, “All [things] are from Allah.” So, what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any statement? (Quran 4:78)

The hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurairah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) in which the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) narrates Allah’s (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) attributes mentions the name Al-Wajid. (Sunan Ibn Majah 3861).

Significance of Al-Wajid

The name Al-Wajid has two meanings. The first meaning of ‘Wajid’ is ‘to find,’ which translates into the empathetic meaning of Al-Wajid, i.e., The Finder. This highlights Allah’s (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎ resourcefulness and the concept of His being capable of attaining everything without having to depend on anything or anyone. He has no deficiencies and cannot be incapacitated in any way – whatever He wants done, it is done, and whatever He seeks, He will find. As it comes in the Holy Quran:

إِنَّمَآ أَمۡرُهُۥٓ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيۡـًٔا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ

His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, “Be,” and it is. (Quran 36:82)

The second meaning of Al-Wajid is The Perceiver. He perceives and realizes everything in terms of gaining something. In addition, He is the only one who realizes the truth in everything and cannot be deceived—nothing is hidden from Him.

Al-Wajid – Benefits

Believing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎ is Al-Wajid makes us realize the importance of being selfless and putting the needs and wants of others before our own. It also motivates us to keep an open hand for those who seek Him in remembrance and need. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎ is selfless and self-subsisting in every sense of the word; hence, if He has blessed us, we should not hesitate in helping others.

In addition, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is Al-Wajid makes us realize that we can never attain the selflessness that He is capable of because we have limited and finite resources, both in terms of time and money. Helping others depletes our reserves. We can never be resourceful, so we should always turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) to fulfill our needs. He does not expect anything in return and happily blesses the ones who worship Him wholeheartedly.

Moreover, resourcefulness does not only mean fulfilling needs and wants. It can also refer to innovation, solving problems creatively, accomplishing more in less time, and spending resources intelligently without waste. Thus, recognizing this attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) enlightens us to become resourceful in the ways mentioned above.

Al-Wajid – Tasbeeh & Dhikr

Al-Wajid – Naming Children

Children named after this attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) should be taught to help others selflessly and expect reward only from Him. They will have a creative, innovative mind and a pure heart.
