Popular Cities in Sweden with Muslim Population

For almost two decades, there have been around 110,000 to 188,000 Muslims in Sweden. They make up about 1.8 to 4.4 percent of the total population, which is around 9 million. More than 60 percent of Muslims in Sweden live in major cities such as Malmö, Göteborg, and Stockholm.

The Muslims in Sweden are not of the same race or ethnicity but hail from more than 40 countries all over the world. These countries include Iran, Bosnia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and more.  The Turkish Muslim population is the most influential ethnic group within the Swedish Muslim sector. It used to be the largest Muslim population in the country, but now only makes up 10 percent of Swedish Muslims. However, the political influence is still there, with several unified and established lobbying groups.

After the Turkish Muslims, Iranian Muslims make up a major chunk of Muslims in Sweden. Most of them entered the country as refugees after 1985. However, most Muslims in both the Turkish and Iranian populations are of a secular mindset. Only around one-sixth of the Iranian Muslims in Sweden are estimated to be practicing Muslims.

Mosques in Sweden

While there are many small mosques set up in repurposed buildings, there are only 6 purpose-built mosques in Sweden. These include 4 Sunni Muslim mosques in the major city areas of Malmö, Vasteras, Stockholm, and Uppsala. There is also a Shia purpose-built mosque in Trollhättan. Other than these venues, many Muslims in Sweden offer prayers, gather, and perform other religious practices in what are called 'basement mosques.' Swedish mosques remain open during the holy month of Ramadan, but they might not be well-attended if the weather is inclement.

Connect with the Muslim Community in Sweden

While Muslims are a minority population in Sweden, they are the second-largest religious group (after Christians) within the country. If you're in Sweden for any period of time, do connect with the local Muslim communities in your city. One of the most popular places to do so is the Islamic Foundation of Sweden, which is spread across several areas, including Stockholm.

This association founded other setups, such as Young Muslims of Sweden, Islamic Relief in Sweden, Muslim Scouts, the Quran Reader Association, and several Islamic schools in Gothenburg and Stockholm. They aim to strengthen and develop the Muslim presence in Sweden. With their support, Muslims can embrace their identity and practice their religion both publicly and privately.  It also helps Muslims to bring positive contributions to society at large.
