Gälve is the 13th most populous city in Sweden, located only a two-hour drive from Stockholm. While Gälve is situated in Sweden’s Norrland region, the northern part of the country, the city’s proximity to Stockholm makes it more hospitable, as the climate is not as extreme as in some other parts of the region.
The name Gälve is in reference to the river banks because the Gavleån, or the River Gälve, flows across the middle forming a major topographical feature of the city. There are mentions of settlements in the city that date back to 1413; the official charter, however, was issued in 1446. The city eventually became a hub of commerce and industry in Sweden. Manufacturing of everything from textiles and pulp to coffee took place here. So much so that the city is home to Sweden’s top coffee brand, Gevalia.
Major landmarks of Gälve include Gälve University. The buildings that make up the university used to belong to the Swedish infantry before the conversion. Another important site is Gälve Castle, constructed during the reign of King Gustav Vasa. The building is a magnificent example of Renaissance-Baroque architecture with its simple yet robust design. The castle is currently designated as the official residence of the County Governor since Gälve is the county capital.
Famous for its vibrant culture, the city is a center for arts, sports, and a vivacious festive tradition. Various events take place in the city throughout the year. Gälve is known worldwide for its gigantic goat statue that is made out of straw and put on display near Christmas time.
Demographically, Gälve has a population of 103,838 as of 2024, with a fairly equal male-to-female ratio. Most residents are ethnic Swedes, with a small proportion of the population being immigrants. It is difficult to determine the number of Muslims in Gälve specifically because Sweden does not record religious affiliation. According to research conducted by PEW, around 8% of the Swedish population is Muslim.
Since most Muslims are immigrants, and immigrants generally prefer moving to more main cities, like Stockholm in the case of Sweden, we can safely conclude that Gälve has a fairly small population of Muslims. This is further supported by the fact that there is only one mosque in Gälve for the entire Muslim community. Here are details of Al Rashideen Mosque located in Gälve:
Alternatively known as the Gälve Mosque, it was converted from a church located away from the city center. The building was bought in 2008 and turned into a mosque. The building is a simple structure with little indication that it is a mosque, aside from a small dome at the entrance of the building.
The mosque is not very big; however, it is well-maintained. Hygiene is prioritized, and the mosque has a warm atmosphere to welcome travelers and worshippers alike. It is situated near the main road, making it highly accessible and easy to find. There is a separate prayer space for women with a separate entrance. Toilets and ablution facilities are available. The place is clean, peaceful, and perfect for prayer as well as community gatherings. The Al Rashideen Mosque brings together Muslims living in Gälve from all walks of life together as one.
