Dua for remembrance of Allah while ascending or descending is a simple recitation that protects us from the perils of the path and keeps us connected to our Creator. Dhikr is the most excellent and essential act of worship through which believers can remember Allah and seek His nearness. Moreover, remembering Allah during daily chores or tasks can also help you earn his blessings and ensure convenience in your work. The dhikr to remember Allah while climbing up or going down can be recited in any situation where you may ascend or descend from something – it can be while you're traveling through a plane, walking up or down the stairs, or hiking. [Hisnul 214] [Al-Bukhari, cf. Al-Asqalani, Fathul-Bari 6/135.]
Travel Duas
Since the dua is to be recited while being in a position where one is ascending or descending, it can be recited in any position or place – while traveling, walking up or down the stairs, hiking, or any other similar activity. Muhammad Ibn al-Uthaymin was asked a question about the hadith, whether the Prophet (ï·º) only recited the dua while traveling or also at home when he was climbing up and down the stairs. Sheikh replied: While traveling, when the Prophet (ï·º) successfully climbed up a hill, he would say the Takbeer (Allaahu' Akbar), and when he went down into a valley, he would say Subhaanallaah. This is because when one is above a thing, one should proclaim the greatness of Allah, as He must always be exalted and glorified. And when a person descends, they should praise the greatness of Allah in the same way by saying Subhaanallaah. However, there is no evidence the Prophet (ï·º) did not say the Takbeer and Tasbeeh while climbing up the stairs.
