Fasting for a long day should not end with you eating food ferociously upon hearing the Athaan. Our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) has taught us a beautiful dua upon breaking fast, which every Muslim should practice at the time of iftar. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى )sends down His blessings at the time of iftar onto its believers who forbid eating and drinking for His sake. So when we make dua upon breaking fast, it is surely to be accepted if Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى )wills, as it is the time when Allah listens to His servants who are observing fast.
The dua upon breaking fast was taught by the beloved Prophet (ﷺ) and is reported by Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ. He said that he saw Ibn Umar( رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ ) holding his beard with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. Ibn Umar( رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ ) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said when he broke his fast, He recited the dua upon breaking fast (Sunan Abi Dawud 2357, Book 14, Hadith 45).
Another dua taught by our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) for breaking fast is:
Translation: 'O Allah! I ask You by Your mercy, which encompasses all things, to forgive me.'
In another reference in Ibn Majah, it is narrated by 'Abdullah bin' Amr bin'( رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ ) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said that, "When a fasting person breaks his fast, his supplication is not turned back. 'One of the narrators, Ibn Abi Mulaika, said that he heard Abdullah bin Amr ( رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ ) reciting this dua upon breaking his fast (Sunan Ibn Majah 1753, Book 7, Hadith 116).
Food & Drink Duas
Thahabadh-dhama'u wabtallatil-'urooqu, wa thabatal-'ajru 'inshaa'Allaah.
The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.
Iftar is a very precious time when the servants of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى )are very close to Him, and their supplications are fulfilled and not returned empty-handed. While sitting on iftar and you hear the Athaan, raise your hands and make dua to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى ), taught by our beloved Prophet (ﷺ). It's best to do ablution prior to iftar, as Islam promotes purity. When making dua, always keep your intentions pure and trust Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى ) with the results. Reciting dua upon breaking the fast is a way of thanking Allah for completing the fast without difficulty asking for his blessings and forgiveness.
Dua is considered as a direct form of communication with the Almighty, Allah. It connects you with your Lord, reflecting gratitude and your dependence on Allah's mercy. Dua is a powerful weapon of every Muslim that can change the fate of an individual. Making dua upon breaking fast brings Allah's blessings to you. Making dua while breaking the fast is a way of seeking forgiveness and asking for strength from Allah alone. When you recite this dua, you are thanking Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى ) for the food and drink He provided you to break this fast. Making dua at the iftar time, upon breaking the fast, ensures the acceptance of our dua.
