Food & Drink

Eating and drinking are the necessities of life. Like every other important matter, Islam also teaches us the manners of eating and drinking through the Quran and Sunnah. Food & drink duas are also a part of these teachings. Dua is a type of worship, seeking mercy and guidance from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, for the fulfillment of one's needs, as mentioned in the 60th verse of Surah Ghafir and 186th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah. The concept of dua being a sort of worship is explained in the Hadith number 2969 of At-Tirmidhi:

Translation -  Narrated An-Nu'man bin Bashir:
from the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding Allah's saying: Your Lord said: Invoke Me, I shall respond to you (40:60, it appears that the author intended to apply it to Al-Baqarah 2:186). - he said: "The supplication is the worship." And he recited: 'Your Lord said: Invoke Me, I shall respond to you.' up to His saying: 'in humiliation.'"

Benefits and Virtues of Reciting Food and Drink Duas in Light of the Quran and Sunnah

Food and drink are the essentialities of life. Islam provides guidance and manners on this important part of life, like the 114th verse of Surah An-Nahl, where believers are urged to eat and drink whatever is made available for them but with thankfulness to Allah.

Translation - So eat out of the lawful and good sustenance that Allah has bestowed upon you, and thank Allah for His bounty if it is Him that you serve.

Similarly, there are many references available in the Quran and Sunnah on food and drinks, including various duas that are required to be recited before, during, and after taking food and drinks. The virtues and benefits of these duas are countless. Some of those are explained below:

Food And Drink Dua Clears Former And Later Sins

When someone recites Dua while taking meals, his previous sins are forgiven by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. It is narrated in Hadith 4023 in Sunan Abi Dawud

Translation - Narrated Mu'adh ibn Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If anyone eats food and then says: "Praise be to Allah Who has fed me with this food and provided me with it through no might and power on my part," he will be forgiven his former and later sins. If anyone puts on a garment and says: "Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with this and provided me with it through no might and power on my part," he will be forgiven his former and later sins.

Food And Drink Dua Protects From Iblis

It is the highly recommended act to say Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ) before eating and drinking, as narrated in the Hadith 3767 of Sunan Abi Dawud

Translation - Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When one of you eats, he should mention Allah's name; if he forgets to mention Allah's name at the beginning, he should say: "In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it."

So, whenever we start something with the name of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, it keeps Satan (Iblis) away. When taking food and drink in this manner, both the reciter and the food are protected from the evils of Satan.

Food And Drink Dua Brings Mercy

Any dua, including the food and drink dua brings mercy and blessings of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. That's why Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised to seek forgiveness and mercy, frequently from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, as narrated in the Hadith number 6307 of Sahih Al-Bukhari.

Translation - Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying." By Allah! I ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day."

Food And Drink Dua Is Liked By Allah

When a believer makes dua, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى appreciates their act of Dua. So, the duas recited before, during, and after taking meals are equally appreciated by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. There are many references from Hadith where it is advised to seek blessings and mercy of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, as He likes it and gets angry with those who don't supplicate. It is narrated in Hadith 3373 of Jami At-Trimidhi.

Translation - Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Indeed, he who does not ask Allah, he gets angry with him."

So, reciting Dua pleases Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and brings lots of blessings for the reciters.

Food And Drink Dua Inculcates Humility

While taking meals, it should always be in the mind that all rizq is sent by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, and nothing could have been possible without His Will. Reciting Dua and offering thanks to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى for his blessings, Who made it possible for us to have these meals, brings humbleness in one's attitude.

Making duas at meal times keeps away arrogance, which is a much-desired state of mind. The relevance of these duas is even more important because food is the basic necessity of life, and one should always be thankful to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى for fulfilling our needs.
