Sickness & Death

Dua is the sunnah of prophets. All prophets of Allah, including our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) made dua to Allah in times of turmoil and tranquility. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Quran, "Call to Me that I may answer your call” (40:60). Regarding this particular verse, An-Nu`man bin Bashir (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The supplication, is worship." Then he recited verse 60 of Chapter 40, Surah Ghafir (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3372, 40:60). Such is the significance of supplicating directly to Allah and seeking His power of healing over all that He created. Make it a habit to recite daily supplications as well as those prescribed for special occasions, as seen in the life of the messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Sunnah of our Prophet (ﷺ) is a guiding Noor that enlightens our mornings and nights. Abu Hurairah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrated that The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "There is nothing more honorable with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) than supplication." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3370)

Benefits and Virtues of Reciting Sickness and Death Duas in Light of the Quran and Sunnah

Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the noble prophet of Allah, says, “And heals me when I am sick “(26:80) to his people. This verse is a reminder that Allah does not abandon the creation after giving them Life, reinforcing the belief of Muslims to completely and utterly rely on Allah with their sickness or death. The major benefit of supplicating these duas is that it allows the believer to humble themselves against the Al-Wahhab (The Bestower).

Abu Dharr (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, “There is no believing servant who supplicates for his brother behind his back (in his absence) that the Angels do not say: The same be for you too.” (Sahih Muslim 2732 a) This is another major benefit of supplicating over other Muslims.

In Islam, every disease has a cure or a treatment. `Aisha (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) (the wife of the Prophet) narrated that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5640) This is reiterated by Abu Huraira (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5678).

Pain and affliction, whether they be sickness or the grief of death, are all matters for which Allah has given a remedy, either through the Quran or the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Ibn al-Qayyim said, “Duʿāʾ is one of the most beneficial remedies. It is the enemy of calamity; it repels it, cures it, prevents its occurrence, and alleviates it or reduces it if it befalls [one]. It is the weapon of the believer.”

Tips To Incorporate Sickness and Death Duas in Our Daily Life

Prophet Muhammad used to make a point to supplicate daily on all occasions of life, including sickness and death. Upon hearing about someone's illness, he visited them and recited dua over them. Here are some tips to make supplicating these specific duas a habit in your life.

  • Recite the duas seeking good health and prosperity daily, to prevent illness or sickness since taking care of one's self is also a duty upon Muslims. In case of catching an illness, it'll help you remember to supplicate and seek the Healer.

  • Give time to reflect on the translation and meaning of the duas with a proper understanding of the supplication. Scholars recommend understanding supplication since it helps one remember and seek the help of Allah with sincerity.

  • Duas for sickness and death also provides emotional support and reliance on Allah’s healing power. A proper understanding and mindful recitation give strength to Muslims to face the challenges of sickness and acceptance of death. Seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness is at the core of all these Duas, forging a strong Iman (faith) of the weak and providing solace in a time of pain.

Incorporate these tips into your daily life since sickness and death are all life's transient nature, and these specific supplications develop acceptance of this truth. This hadith narrated by Abu Musa (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) proves that it is a core value of a Muslim to continuously call upon Allah and His favor. Abu Musa (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) said, “We were in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) on a journey, and whenever we ascended a high place, we used to say Takbir (in a loud voice). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O people! Be kind to yourselves, for you are not calling upon a deaf or an absent one, but You are calling an All-Hearer and an All-Seer." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6384).
