Health is a blessing from Allah. Sickness is always a challenge as it hinders our ability to live life. However, grievous ailments or long-term illnesses cause despair in the sick. Many people worldwide suffer from incurable diseases like cancer, while others suffer from illnesses requiring constant medication and precautions, like thalassemia, diabetes, and auto-immune diseases.
Constant visits to the hospitals, weakness, fatigue, and a feeling that they are a burden on their family can often cause people to despair. However, what is more tragic and painful is when the sick have renounced all hope of life. When hope turns to despair, it is in supplication and prayer that one can find solace and strength to go on.
The only thing that drives one in life is the hope of something better, but when there is sign of betterment, when you know that your sickness will not improve, it takes away hope and the spirit of living. During this time, refuge in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and seeking His love and guidance can make the rest of the days of one's life easier.
Sickness & Death Duas
Allaahum-maghfir lee warhamnee wa 'alhiqnee bir-rafeeqil-'a'laa.
O Allah, forgive me and have mercy upon me and join me with the highest companions (in Paradise).
Laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu 'inna lilmawti lasakaraatin.
There is none worthy of worship but Allah, surely death has agonies.
Laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu wallaahu 'Akbar, laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu wahdahu, laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata 'illaa billaah.
There is none worthy of worship but Allah, Allah is the Most Great. None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone. None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. There is none worthy of worship but Allah, His is the dominion and His is the praise. There is none worthy of worship but Allah, there is no power and no might but by Allah.
The etiquettes of making dua when the sick have renounced all hope of life are with all humbleness rather than showing off what you have that they don't. Be humble and sincere in your attitude while making dua for them. Make dua for what the person who is sick wants and do it in a manner that you do not cause them any discomfort. Do not impose to be in the setting if the ill don't want to meet. Pray in the private and with their family for their comfort and ease of their pain.
Making abundant supplication when the sick have renounced all hope of life can be one of the most important pillars of support. When grappling with an illness that worsens with time, people who are sick and their families often struggle between the thoughts of mortality and uncertainty of life. Dua and praying can serve as a lifeboat that allows people to submit their will and life to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Knowing that we belong to Him and to Him we shall return can help seek spiritual comfort. Making supplication also enhances a sense of resilience in the sick and their families as it reminds them that they have the support of their loved ones.
