It is common to hear the noises of barking dogs at night, which can be anxiety-inducing and disturb your sleep. In Islam, the barking of dogs at night, the crowing of a rooster, or the braying of a donkey at any time of the day has been considered a sign of the animals seeing things that we as humans may be unable to, such as the angels or the devil. Therefore, Muslims have been instructed to seek refuge from the shar (vice) of the Shaytaan from Allah whenever they hear the barking of dogs at night.
Nature Duas
Jabir ibn' Abdullah reported the Prophet (ï·º) to recommend his Ummah to take the following actions upon hearing a dog barking or donkey braying at night: "Shut the doors and mention the Name of Allah over them. Shaytan will not open a door that has been shut and had the name of Allah mentioned over it. Then cover the pots, tie the water skins, and cover the vessels." – Al-Adab al-Mufrad, Book 51 Hadith 3. Therefore, upon hearing the barking of a dog or the braying of a donkey during nighttime, make sure to seek refuge with Allah immediately.
Since the barking of dogs is considered a sign that the dog may have seen the unseen, such as the devil, seeking refuge from Allah safeguards you and your home from the harm or mischief the devil may bring upon you. It also reminds you that you are not alone; Allah is with you, and He will protect you from any threat. When the dogs bark at night, they may not pose a real threat, but the heart is still afraid of the terribleness of their voice. Reciting the dua strengthens our hearts and helps us manage the fear and anxiety from the barking.
