The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions traveled on animals, mainly camels. The Prophet (ﷺ) recited a dua whenever the mounted animal stumbled (Hisn al-Muslim 210). This hadith has been reported to be authentic in Sahih Abu Dawud 3/941. Today, automobiles have replaced animals as a means of transportation. Therefore, this dua can be recited by us when our vehicle hits a bump, misses a near accident, or shows signs of dying down. The dua is simply “بِسْمِ اللَّهِ” meaning “in the name of Allah.” It is easy to remember and recite.
Bismillah is the dua to be recited when you face a problem with your means of transport. The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite this dua whenever his mounted animal (or means of transport) stumbled or had some difficulty while walking. This dua can be recited without wudu, and there is no restriction on whether you are sitting, standing, or lying down. The purpose is to remember Allah and remind ourselves that everything works in Allah’s name.
Reciting the sacred phrase ‘Bismillah’ protects against forces that seek to harm us and the evil of Shaitaan. It also provides comfort and healing in times of physical or emotional distress. Reciting Bismillah when the mounted animal (or means of transport) stumbles invites Allah’s mercy upon the animal and steers away evil and misfortune. It also ensures the safety of the animal and the traveler.

Islam has laid clear guidelines about using animals for human purposes. There are various Hadith and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) love and concern for animals. The Prophet (ﷺ) condemned beating animals and branding or marking their faces. He chastised those who mistreated animals and praised those who were kind to them.
