Whisperings of the devil (Shaitaan), also known as waswasa, can be a great source of temptation and negativity that can drive one towards sinning. In the path of faith, there are numerous times when one has to face influences that may make us vulnerable on the path of righteousness. The first and the biggest benefit of reciting dua for expelling the devil and his whisperings is that it allows one to feel grounded and protected by seeking refuge in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). It is a dua that directs one to stay steadfast on the path of righteousness.
To expel the devil, one has to be steadfast and relentless in pursuing the right path. The Devil may use doubt, distraction, despair, and temptations as tactics to weaken one's connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Humans are weak, and in challenging times, faith may waver. At this time, when you feel yourself weakening and about to give to the devil's whisperings, recite the dua given below and refresh and strengthen your faith.
There is no strict time or specific posture that you have to make dua for expelling the devil and his whisperings. Just pray with full faith, conviction, and sincerity for Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) guidance and seek refuge in him from the evil of the world. According to the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), recite the dua for expelling the devil and his whisperings three times and then blow it on your left [Hisn al-Muslim 193].

'A 'oothu billaahi minash-Shaytaanir-rajeem.
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast
Recitation of the authentic zikr (remembrance of Allah) and the Qur'an. The Devil is driven out by the invocations for morning and evening, zikr before sleeping and upon waking up, zikr for entering and leaving the house, including those for entering and leaving the mosque, and by many other authentic invocations taught to us by the Prophet (SAW) such as the reading of 'Ayatul-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255), and the last two 'ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah and zikr no. 93 100 times, it will be a protection for him from the Devil throughout the day. Also call to prayer (athan).
In the times when one is clouded in their faith due to whisperings, it is important to remember that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is most compassionate, and He is the only one who is the disposer of our affairs, and in Him, we find a refuge from all the good and bad in this world. Making dua for expelling the devil and his whisperings deepens one's reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and prevents you from surrendering to the influence of shaytan. The remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) by reciting a specific supplication can help you become conscious of your act.
Whenever you feel like the whisperings are taking over, seek refuge in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) from the negative and direct yourself mindfully towards something positive.
Overthinking necessarily does not come from the devil, but if you dwell on sorrows or negative thoughts, it does give an advantage for the devil to direct you away from your faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) 's powers.
