Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us the dua upon sighting the crescent moon, to ask Allah for His blessings as the new month starts. The Islamic calendar, known as the Hijri calendar, has 12 months based on lunar cycles. Each month consists of 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the new moon. It is suggested that Muslims see the new moon, especially for the month of Ramadan and both Eids.
This dua upon sighting the crescent moon is taught by our Prophet (ﷺ) and is narrated by Bilal bin Yahya bin Talha bin Ubaidullah in Jami At-Tirmidhi (Vol 6, Book45, Hadith 3451). The same Hadith is also narrated by Talha bin Ubaidullah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) in Riyad as-Salihin (1228, Book 8, Hadith 238). A similar hadith is reported in Mishkat Al Masabih ( Book 9, Hadith 198).
Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahumma 'ahillahu 'alayna bil'amni wal'eemaani, wassalaamati wal-'Islaami, wattawfeeqi limaa tuhibbu Rabbanaa wa tardhaa, Rabbunaa wa Rabbukallaahu.
Allah is the Most Great. O Allah, bring us the new moon with security and Faith, with peace and in Islam, and in harmony with what our Lord loves and what pleases Him. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah.
Dua connects us directly with Allah. As Muslims, when we make dua, we place our trust in Allah with the dua to be answered in the best possible way. When a new moon is sighted, it is best to make dua to Allah, asking for His blessings for the upcoming month. It is taught by our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) to make dua on every occasion, be it a moment to thank Allah for His blessings and rewards or ask Allah for help in difficulty.
When making dua upon sighting the crescent moon, it is suggested to raise both hands to make dua to Allah. Before making dua, do not forget to praise Allah and send a blessing on the Prophet (ﷺ), as this adds strength to your dua and chances of acceptance get high. While it's not necessary, doing ablution to maintain the state of purity is encouraged for Muslims.
Any dua recited brings blessings of Allah. When you recite dua upon sighting the crescent moon, according to Hadith (Riyad as-Salihin (1228, Book 8, Hadith 238), you ask Allah for guidance, good fortune, safety, and increase in Imaan. When recited wholeheartedly after sighting the new moon, this dua brings Allah's blessings and protection for the new month.
Making a dua asking for a blessed month is placing trust in Allah and surrendering yourself before Allah. Allah loves those who make dua to him, even in small matters. Making dua upon seeing the new moon is seeking forgiveness from Allah for the past month and asking for guidance and increased Imaan in the upcoming month. By making dua to Allah, it is asking HIm for His protection against any harm or misfortune.
So, make it a routine to recite this beautiful short dua whenever you sight a new moon, as this is taught by our beloved Prophet (ﷺ). Walking on the path of Sunnah will lead you to a good life and hereafter.
Dua upon sighting crescent moon is simple and taught by our beloved Prophet (ﷺ). It is:
"O Allah, bring it over us with blessing and faith, and security and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah" (Jami At-Tirmidhi 3451)
Yes, you can always make any dua when sighting the new moon. Making dua from Hadith is preferred as it was done by our Prophet (ﷺ).
Sighting the moon is not necessary for every individual, but it should be done to seek rewards from Allah and as an act of Ibadah.
