Dua for When wearing a new garment

The dua for wearing a new garment is something we all should know and try to inculcate in our lifestyles because it is the Prophet Muhammad's (ﷺ) Sunnah. It is a means of expressing gratitude to Allah and strengthening one's religious identity.

This dua was taught by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself and is something that was reiterated by him time and again. It is narrated by AbuSa'id al-Khudri (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) put on a new garment, he mentioned it by name, turban or shirt, and would then say: O Allah, praise be to Thee! as Thou hast clothed me with it, I ask Thee for its good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in Thee from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made (Sunan Abi Dawud 4020).

In another instance, Abu Umamah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrated that Umar bin Al-Khattab (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) wore a new garment and said this dua. Then he (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrated that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) direct to say this dua when wearing a new garment (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3560). Also narrated by Narrated Mu'adh ibn Anas (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) that if someone puts on a garment and reads this dua their previous sins will be forgiven (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023).

The Etiquettes of Reciting Dua for When Wearing a New Garment

When wearing a new garment, one should start with Bismillah, mention the garment by its name, and then recite the dua after wearing the garment. Dua for When Wearing a New Garment Benefits

There are multitudes of benefits associated with this dua. By reciting the dua for wearing a new garment, one would be fulfilling the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and simultaneously participating in the Dhikr of Allah Azzawajal, both carrying rewards for the reciter.

By reciting the dua, we express our gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), and Allah rewards those who remember Him in good times and shows their thankfulness to Him. On the other hand, those who are ungrateful to Allah for His countless blessings garner Allah's displeasure and the Qilat Albarakah, misfortune, and bad luck that follows with it.

In Surah Ibrahim, the 14th chapter of the Quran, Allah tabarak wa ta'ala says:

وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ ۖ وَلَئِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِي لَشَدِيدٌ

Also, call to mind when your Lord proclaimed: "If you give thanks, I will certainly grant you more; but if you are ungrateful for My favors, My chastisement is terrible. Ibraheem (14:7)

The dua you recite when wearing a new garment serves as a reminder of how everything comes from Allah, who is The Provider of us all and serves as a means of helping the person stay humble.
