40 Hadith Qudsi

الحديث القدسي

Hadith Qudsi is a special category of Hadith, the compendium of sayings attributed to Prophet (ﷺ). These Hadiths are unique because their content is attributed to Allah but the actual wording was credited to Prophet (ﷺ), thus occupying a status between Quran & normal Hadith text.

What Are Hadith Qudsi?

Hadith are second to the word of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), the noble Quran, in terms of wisdom and knowledge about Islam and its practices. Scholars say that to see the Quran in practice, Muslims must refer to the life (Sunnah) and sayings (Hadith) of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Through meticulous preservation, science, and an authenticated chain of narrators (Isnad), Hadiths are transmitted to present-day Muslims.

Forty Hadith, or Arbaʿīniyyāt, is a scholarly tradition and a subgenre of Hadith literature which, as the name indicates, are collections containing forty Hadith related to particular subjects depending on their purpose. 40 Hadith Qudsi is one such collection.

This book is a compendium of unique Hadiths where the essence or contents of the saying is attributed to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), but the actual wording is by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). They are not included in the Quranic revelations, which are considered to be the verbatim word of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) but rather are given a special category, a status between the Quran and usual Hadiths from the Sunnah. They are named Qudsi, meaning pure or holy, as the authority (Sanad) is traced back not to the Prophet (ﷺ) but to the Almighty Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى).

Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrates "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Beware! I have been given the Qur'an and something like it" (Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) Sunan Abi Dawud 4604). This Hadith gives evidence that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) indeed gave particular guidance that was transmitted by the Prophet (ﷺ) in his own words.

According to as-Sayyid ash-Sharif al-Jurjani (died in 816 A.H.) in his lexicon At-Tarifat: "A Sacred Hadith is, as to the meaning, from Allah the Almighty; as to the wording, it is from the messenger of Allah. It is that which Allah the Almighty has communicated to His Prophet through revelation or in dream, and he, peace be upon him, has communicated it in his own words. Thus, the Quran is superior to it because, besides being revealed, it is His wording."

Where Are the Hadith Qudsi Recorded?

The individual hadiths are sourced from authentic compilations such as Sahih Muslim, Sahih Al Bukhari, Jami Tirmidhi, etc. The compilation of 40 Hadith Qudsi is often attributed to Imam Nawawi (full name: Abu Zakaria Mohiuddin Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi), an eminent Islamic scholar and jurist who lived in the 13th century. However, several differing compilations of Hadith Qudsi have been made according to the compiler's own judgment and authentication standards.

Organized into forty individual hadiths, each Hadith contains a narration of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in which he conveys the words of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). These Hadiths cover a range of topics, some with direct commandments from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and others with lessons of gratitude and mercy. They are carefully selected and verified against the renowned books of Hadith and their conformity to Islamic teachings.

The method for a Hadith to be classified as "Qudsi" is for its content to be attributed to Allah, but the words to be conveyed by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). They are the commandments that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) conveyed to the believers in Islam, in his own words.

Here are a few key terms you must know while reading and learning the Hadiths:

  • Qudsi: sacred, pure, or holy
  • Sanad: authority
  • Isnad: chain of narration, by the companions and their successors, tracing the transmission of a hadith back to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
  • Matan: the text or content of a hadith

According to the following Hadith, learning and passing on that knowledge is an essential virtue of a believing and practicing Muslim. In Sunan Abi Dawud, Zayd ibn ThabitI (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) brighten a man who hears a tradition from us, gets it by heart, and passes it on to others. Many a bearer of knowledge conveys it to one who is more versed than he is, and many a bearer of knowledge is not versed in it. (Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) Sunan Abi Dawud 3660)
