The Muslim population in Sydney is culturally, lingually, and ethnically diverse. Comprising of immigrants from more than 120 countries, Muslims in Sydney initially faced many challenges and had to work hard to build a thriving new environment for themselves. As per estimates taken in 2016, the Muslim population comprised approximately 3.4 percent of Sydney's population, and this proportion has gradually increased over the years. The Muslims of Sydney are an integral part of the city's multicultural society. Although there aren't many mosques in Sydney, there are some well-known mosques and community centres in neighbouring cities. The Gallipoli Mosque is one of Australia's largest and most well-known mosques. Omer Kirazoglu built the mosque, which covers an area of over one acre. It is designed in the Classical Ottoman style of architecture with classic domes and minarets. The mosque showcases the holistic legacy of the Australian and Turkish Muslim societies. The congregation comprises approximately 50 percent Turkish and 50 percent Muslims from various ethnic backgrounds.
The mission of the Auburn Gallipoli is to endorse peace in Australia. A central goal of the mosque's management is to become a vital contributor to the religious, social, and cultural needs of the Muslim community and a promoter of the interests of Muslims worldwide. Besides the mandatory five-time Salah and weekly Jummah, the mosque offers Nikal services and Quran courses and facilitates conversion to Islam.
Masjid Al Zahra, or Al Zahra Mosque, was established in 1980 and is among Australia's largest mosques. It is also the first Shia mosque in Australia. The mosque is located in Arncliffe, which is a 19-minute drive from Sydney, and, despite being a Shia mosque, is considered very welcoming to Muslims of all denominations. The mosque boasts Iranian architecture. Al Zahra Mosque believes in promoting the true message of Islam through the Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet. A project of the Al Zahra Mosque is the Al Zahra College, founded by Professor Ahmad Abdul Majeed Hammoud, which offers various courses and diplomas in Islamic education.
The Lakemba Mosque is also known as the Imam Ali Bin Abi Taleb Mosque. The mosque is prominently associated with the internationally recognized Lebanese Muslim Association (LMA), which has been operational since 1962 and is the primary caretaker of the mosque. The congregation consists mainly of Pakistani, Somali, Bangladeshi, and East-Asian Muslims and a growing number of converts. The Lakemba Mosque was opened in 1972 and is also one of the largest mosques in Australia.
It hosts thousands of people weekly, and more than 100,000 attend and are involved in major events and milestones such as Eid and Jummah prayers. Additionally, the Lakemba Mosque has successfully transitioned to become the first solar-powered mosque in Australia. Lakemba Mosque organizes many religious classes on Fiqh, Aqeedah, and Prophetic biography. Moreover, the mosque serves as a platform for different reputable local Shaykhs to deliver sermons and spread Islamic education. From 2014 onwards, the Lakemba Mosque has served as the center of the National Mosque Open Day event.
A 26-minute drive from Sydney is Penshurst, and located in the southern suburb of Penshurst in the St. George Area is Penshurst Mosque. It is managed by the Australian Islamic Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina Inc. Penshurst Mosque has served the needs of the Muslim community for more than 30 years and believes in establishing co-existence and tolerance within the society. To foster inter-religious and intercultural understanding among the community, the mosque annually hosts an "Open Mosque Day," inviting everyone to join the Bosnian Muslim culture and meet the congregation members. The main goal of the mosque is to abolish prejudice about religion. The Penshurst Mosque organizes daily five-time Salah and Jummah prayers. It also participates actively in local affairs, such as fund-raisers for different community causes.
Also located in Lakemba is Masjid As-Sunnah, a beautiful mosque with a good library featuring a diverse collection of Islamic literature. The mosque organizes five-time congregational prayers, Jummah prayers, Tarawih during Ramadan, and Eid prayers. The masjid actively organizes charity events to help the Muslim community and those in need through its Sunnah Foundation. These include sponsorship and care programs for orphans and water projects. Masjid As-Sunnah also offers lessons on various topics such as Tauhid, Fiqh, Aqeedah, and the teachings of the Holy Prophet. Iftaar services are arranged during Ramadan as well.
