Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria, with its population being 98% Muslim. The city first came into existence in the third century BC. While there are many historical mosques dating back several centuries, most of the mosques in the country were built after its independence in 1962. There are 450 mosques in the city of Algiers. Here's a list of some of the most-visited mosques in Algiers, including some calm neighborhood ones.
The Grand Mosque of Algiers is the third largest mosque in the world after Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid An-Nabwi. It has the world's tallest minaret that has an observation deck at the top. The capacity for the main prayer hall is 37,000, but the whole mosque's complex can accommodate 120,000 worshippers. The specialty of the mosque is its 265-meter-tall minaret, making it the tallest building in all of Africa. It is built to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 9.0, with the structure processed to resist corrosion. The complex also contains a Quran school, a park, a library, a staff housing area, a fire station, a museum of Islamic art, and a research center on the history of Algeria. Note: The mosque is not open for Friday prayers.

The facilities at the mosque are well-maintained, and the regular worshippers praise the mosque for being clean.
Overlooking the ports of Algiers, Al-Rahma is a former church repurposed into a mosque in 1970. It was built in 1897 during the French colonial era, with its construction coming to completion in 1903. It is located near a busy Agha train station, making it accessible for those in a hurry to pray in the congregation. Across the adjacent street is a subway station, too. The exterior of the mosque has not been touched, and it remains that of the previous church. However, the interior has been painted with white and gold ornaments and calligraphies in the Islamic-Othmani style. While no official information is available, visitors claim the mosque does hold Friday and Eid congregational prayers.
Built in an Arab Andalusian style, Zaouia Belkaidia El Hebria is a magnificent mosque attracting worshippers and visitors from all over the vicinity. It is a well-lit and beautifully decorated mosque that fills the worshipper with serenity. The inner prayer hall is decorated with Islamic calligraphy and designs. The marbled courtyard and the rest of the complex are very well-maintained. The regular worshippers commend the caretakers for their cleanliness and maintenance of the mosque.
Dating back to 1660/1070, AH is among the oldest mosques in Algiers, Algeria. An inscription over its main entrance was constructed by al-Hajj Habib, a member of the sultan's guard appointed by the Ottoman imperial administration in Istanbul. Djamaa al-Djedid, meaning New Mosque, is a mix of Ottoman, North African and European architectural styles. It overlooks the ports of Algiers, near a busy coastal highway called Rue d'Angkor. The exterior of the mosque is built with stone and is completely whitewashed. The clock was added by the French architect Bournichon and was originally part of the Palais Jenina. The mosque is popular due to its historical as well as architectural significance. Prayers can be offered on the site as it is not closed to the public.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said," A man's prayer said along with another is purer than his prayer said alone, and his prayer with two men is purer than his prayer with one, but if there are more, it is more pleasing to Allah, the Almighty, the Majestic." (Sunan Abi Dawud 554) The hadith above illustrates distinctly the importance of congregation in Islam. It is the reason why Muslims all over the world rush to mosques nearby to offer their prayers alongside their brothers in faith. As Muslims, we should strive our best to offer our prayers on time, as well as with the congregation.
