Mosques are where Muslims feel a sense of community and unite to engage in Salah and worship. Mosques are a fairly new addition to the city of Toulouse, but as the Muslim population continues to increase in the city, so does the number of mosques. The French government believes that it is better to give Muslim permission to create formal mosques in the city according to city regulations rather than have small unregistered mosques in basements and car parks to avoid extremist activity. Hence, there is a notable increase in the number of mosques in French cities in the past 10 years. Let's read about the popular mosques in Toulouse, France.
The Great Mosque of Toulouse was established in 2018. It is located in the southern city of the Empalot and can host around 3,000 worshippers. The mosque was constructed with the funds collected by mosque Al-Nour, a nearby mosque. The states of France, Algeria, and Kuwait, also contributed to help complete the project. The mosque is spacious; it has three prayer halls, including a separate salah area for women, so sisters who want to pray in a women-only area can pray in privacy. The mosque also has a Quranic school that teaches the Quran to youth and Muslims in Toulouse.
The location of the mosque is also highly convenient as it is located only 350 meters distance from the Empalot metro station. The mosque's architecture is a diverse and beautiful mix of Turkish, Egyptian, and Moroccan architectural and decorative elements. Christian Barthe, one of the most famous Parisian architects, designed the mosque. It is adorned with goldwork, fountains, and beautiful Arabic designs throughout the building. The main building is surrounded by a courtyard, and there is ample parking.
The mosque has also established the Al-Azhari Institute of the Great Mosque of Toulouse. This learning institute is a registered organization that teaches French Muslims the Arabic language, Quran, and Islam. Classes are in Arabic and French to facilitate the local community.

Mosquée Mirail Toulouse, the first mosque in the city of Toulouse, was established in 1997 when an agreement was signed between the Culturelle Islamique en France (ACCIF) and the Société d'Equipement de Toulouse Midi Pyrénées (SETOMIP). The mosque's establishment was a significant event at the time, as the number of Muslims in the city was merely a few thousand, and the community did not have a mosque to cater to their needs.
The mosque uses and encourages French as the language of communication, while Arabic is used for prayers. The activities of the mosque are as follows:
Other educational materials are also provided by the mosque, such as a science program to help educate the French Muslim youth, including children, on the rules of science. Additionally, the mosque also hosts live broadcasts around three times a week on lectures about the principles of Islam to ensure Muslim youth in Toulouse are aware of the teachings of the Islamic faith.
