Islam has been present in the region since the conquest of Iberia and the conquest of Ghaul when the Umayyad forces annexed modern-day Southern France. Another important era of Muslim influx in the region was from 1609 to 1614 when around 50,000 Moriscos who were expelled from Moriscos settled in France.
Labor immigration has also been an important element that has led to the presence of Muslims in France. These laborers mostly arrived in France from Algeria and North African colonies under the French authority. Although France is a secular state, the government in recent years has tried to organize a representative for the Muslim community in France known as the "French Council of the Muslim Faith" (Conseil Français du Culte Musulman – CFCM).
There are also a few Muslim schools in the region. For instance, one in La Réunion (a French island in the Indian Ocean). A Muslim college was also established in Aubervilliers (a suburb in the Paris northeastern area). However, since public schools in France must be secular, most Muslim parents in the country often choose private education Catholic schools for their children as they are also free of pay even if they may be heavily subsidized.
France has also been known to implement Islamophobic policies and discriminate against Muslims in terms of fewer job opportunities and banning the hijab. In 2011, France became the first European country to impose a ban on full-face veils in public areas and has also banned abaya dress in schools.
