The Adhan (call to prayer) can be heard all over the historical city at prayer times in Alexandria. Here is a list of mosques to catch your prayer with Jamaat (congregation). Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and the largest city on the Mediterranean coast. It is an important coastal city and a popular tourist location in the Mediterranean. Founded in c. 331 BC by Alexander the Great, this region holds immense historical significance and was once home to the biggest library in history, the Library of Alexandria. The city, throughout its times, has homed many significant scholars of the time. These are some historically significant as well as popular mosques among the worshippers in Alexandria, and most of these mosques are listed below:
Overlooking the Al Mina' ash Sharqiyah corniche, Al Mursi Abu Al Abbas Mosque has a gravesite of the Sufi scholar it is named after. Al Mursi Abu Al Abbas lived in Alexandria for 43 years as a scholar and teacher until he died in 1286. In 1307, El Sheikh Zein El Din funded a mausoleum and dome for the tomb, along with a small mosque. The site became a popular religious pilgrimage location for Muslims from Egypt and Morocco. Constructed in a Cairo-Mamluk style, its exterior is adorned with sandy, cream-colored stones, with a similar minaret rising 73 meters to its south. It was renovated several times, once in 1863 and again in 1943. King Farouq I built the Midan el Masged, or "Mosque Square." It is surrounded by several smaller mosques in the square.
Along the coastal highway, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Al Qaaed Ibrahim Basha Mosque is a historical mosque attracting worshippers from all over the city of Al Iskandariya (Alexander). This mosque was built in 1948 to commemorate the commander and founder of the modern Egyptian military, Ibrahim Pasha bin Muhammad Ali Pasha. A magnificent minaret stands beside the mosque, garnering attention from the onlookers due to its height and design.
It was designed by an Italian-born engineer, Mario Rossi. The design is inspired by the Arabesque style found across the region. The mosque has clean, well-maintained facilities and is popular in the month of Ramadhan for nightly Tarawih prayers. It was once headed by Sheikh Ahmed Al Mahlawy and then later by Sheikh Hatem Farid Al Waad, who attracted many worshippers at Tarawih prayers in Ramadhan.
Due to its proximity to vast cemetery grounds, El Emary Mosque is a popular mosque for funeral prayers. It is considered a historical landmark and is among the oldest mosques in the city. It is said to have been built after the conquest of Muslims under Amr Ibn Al-Aas. It continues to stand as a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Note: Locals have warned visitors regarding traffic jams in the vicinity during afternoon prayers due to the funeral prayers.
While the mosque is popular for being the gravesite of the Prophet Daniyal (Danial), some sources also claim it to be a righteous man who came to Alexandria at the end of the eighth century AH. His name was Sheikh al-Arif Muhammad Daniel al-Mawsili. This mosque is considered to be renovated in the year 1238 by Muhammad Ali Pasha. It is across the ruins of the ancient Roman theatre.
Established in 1937 during the reign of King Farouq, Al Mowasah mosque is a popular congregational site for Muslims all across the city of Alexandria. The architect of the mosque is Ricardo Smith from Italy. Sheikh Yassin Rushdi, the former imam of the mosque, expanded the mosque to seven times its initial size. The first expansion was in 1979, then a second time in 1989, then the third in 1994. The mosque has an additional minaret apart from its original Ottoman-styled one. The complex of the mosque features several green spaces and is inclusive of women with a separate space for them. It has separate halls for marriage events or funeral gatherings. It is a popular gathering location for the locals.
Prophet Muhammad built the first mosque in Madina after Hijrah for all Muslims to congregate. Since then, Mosques have become central to Muslim communities and can be found all over the world wherever the message of Islam went. The core purpose of the mosque is to congregate prayers. Prophet Muhammad gave immense importance to congregational prayers, deeming them twenty-five times better than a prayer performed alone (Sunan an-Nasa'i 839).
