٩ - ٱلتَّوْبَة

9 - At-Tawba

قُلْ اِنْ كَانَ اٰبَاۗؤُكُمْ وَاَبْنَاۗؤُكُمْ وَاِخْوَانُكُمْ وَاَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَشِيْرَتُكُمْ وَاَمْوَالُۨ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوْہَا وَتِجَارَۃٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَہَا وَمَسٰكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَہَاۗ اَحَبَّ اِلَيْكُمْ مِّنَ اللہِ وَرَسُوْلِہٖ وَ جِہَادٍ فِيْ سَبِيْلِہٖ فَتَرَبَّصُوْا حَتّٰي يَاْتِيَ اللہُ بِاَمْرِہٖ۝۰ۭ وَاللہُ لَا يَہْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفٰسِقِيْنَ۝۲۴ۧ
Qul in kana abaokum waabnaokum waikhwanukum waazwajukum waAAasheeratukum waamwalun iqtaraftumooha watijaratun takhshawna kasadaha wamasakinu tardawnaha ahabba ilaykum mina Allahi warasoolihi wajihadin fee sabeelihi fatarabbasoo hatta yatiya Allahu biamrihi waAllahu la yahdee alqawma alfasiqeena

You tell them: "If your fathers and sons, your brothers and wives and families and wealth, or the business you fear may fail, and the mansions that you love, are dearer to you than God, His Apostle, and struggling in His cause, then wait until God's command arrives, for God does not show transgressors the way."

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (say) o muhammad: (if your fathers, and your sons, and your brethren, and your wives, and your tribe) your folk who are in mecca, (and the wealth ye have acquired) you have earned, (and merchandise for which ye fear that there will be no sale) that will not be spent in medina, (and dwellings) houses (ye desire) to live in (are dearer to you than allah) than allah's obedience (and his messenger) and dearer to you than migrating to his messenger (and striving in his way) for the sake of his obedience: (then wait till allah bringeth his command to pass) his punishment, i.e. killing upon the conquest of mecca. those who migrated after this (allah guideth not) he does not lead to his religion (wrong-doing folk) the disbelievers: those who not deserve it.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : say: ‘if your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your clan, your kinsmen (‘ashīratukum: a variant reading has ‘ashīrātukum), and the possessions which you have acquired, and merchandise for which you fear there may be no sale, no longer viable, and dwellings which you love, are dearer to you than god and his messenger and struggling in his way, so that you have refrained from emigrating and struggling for the sake of such [things], then wait until god brings about his command — this is meant as a threat to them. and god does not guide the wicked folk’.
