And all that they had done (for security) availed them nothing.

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī
تفسير : (and that which they were wont to count as gain) their words, deeds and that which they worshipped (availed them not) against allah's torment.
Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī
تفسير : and so that which they used to count as gain, in the way of building fortresses and amassing riches, did not avail, [did not] protect, them, from the chastisement.
