16 - An-Nahl

ثُمَّ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِيْنَ عَمِلُوا السُّوْۗءَ بِجَــہَالَۃٍ ثُمَّ تَابُوْا مِنْۢ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ وَاَصْلَحُوْۗا۝۰ۙ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنْۢ بَعْدِہَا لَغَفُوْرٌ رَّحِيْمٌ۝۱۱۹ۧ
Thumma inna rabbaka lillatheena AAamiloo alssooa bijahalatin thumma taboo min baAAdi thalika waaslahoo inna rabbaka min baAAdiha laghafoorun raheemun

To those who do wrong out of ignorance, then repent and correct themselves, your Lord is indeed forgiving and kind.

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (then lo! thy lord) o muhammad (for those who do evil in ignorance) intentionally even if they are ignorant of committing it (and afterward repent) after committing such an evil (and amend) their work between themselves and their lord - (lo! (for them) thy lord is afterward) after repentance (indeed forgiving, merciful) towards them.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : then indeed your lord — to those who did evil, associating others [with god], out of ignorance, and then repented, returned [to god’s way], after that and made amends, in their actions — indeed your lord after that, that is, [after] that ignorance, or that repentance, is forgiving, of them, merciful, to them.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : but towards those who did wrong out of ignorance, and afterwards, repent and make amends, your lord is forgiving and merciful.sahl said:no one ever disobeyed god, exalted is he, save through ignorance, yet many an act of ignorancegives rise to knowledge. knowledge is the key to repentance. making amends (iṣlāḥ) is [a sign of] a sound repentance. whoever does not make amends as ⸢a part of (fī)⸣ his repentance,[will find] his repentance is soon ruined, for god, exalted is he, has said, and afterwards, repent and make amends.sahl was asked about the ignorant person [referred to in the verse]. he said:he is the one who takes himself as his guide (imām), and has no virtuous guide (imām ṣāliḥ) whom he follows.his words:
