They replied: "We cannot choose you in the face of the clear testimony we have received, and over Him who created us. So do what you are determined to do. All that you would do will only be confined to our life on earth.

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (they said) the magicians said to pharaoh: (we choose thee not) we will not choose worshipping and obeying you (above the clear proofs) of commands, prohibitions, the scripture, the messenger and all the signs (that have come unto us, and above him who created us) we will choose to worship he who created us. (so decree what thou wilt decree) so proceed to do whatever you wish and sentence us with whatever sentence you wish. (thou wilt end for us only the life of the world) you will sentence us only in this worldly life but you do not have any power over us in the hereafter.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : they said, ‘we will not choose you over what has come to us of clear signs, proving the truthfulness of moses, and [over] him who originated us, created us (wa’lladhī fatarana, either an oath, or a supplement to [the preceding] mā, ‘what’). decree what you will decree, that is, do what you say. what you decree is only [relevant] in the life of this world (al-hayāta’l-dunyā, is in the accusative because the scope [of his decree] is being indicated, in other words ‘[you can only decree] in it’); yet you will be requited for it in the hereafter.
