٣١ - لُقْمَان

31 - Luqman

وَاِنْ جَاہَدٰكَ عَلٰۗي اَنْ تُشْرِكَ بِيْ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِہٖ عِلْمٌ۝۰ۙ فَلَا تُطِعْہُمَا وَصَاحِبْہُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوْفًا۝۰ۡوَّاتَّبِــعْ سَبِيْلَ مَنْ اَنَابَ اِلَيَّ۝۰ۚ ثُمَّ اِلَيَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَاُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ۝۱۵
Wain jahadaka AAala an tushrika bee ma laysa laka bihi AAilmun fala tutiAAhuma wasahibhuma fee alddunya maAAroofan waittabiAA sabeela man anaba ilayya thumma ilayya marjiAAukum faonabbiokum bima kuntum taAAmaloona

Ahmed Ali

If they try to force you to associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. Live with them honourably in the world, but follow the way of him who turns to Me. Your returning is to Me in the end, when I will tell you what you did.

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (but if they strive with thee to make thee) if they want or command you to (ascribe unto me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge) that it is my partner while you know that it is not my partner, (then obey them not) regarding idolatry. (consort with them in the world kindly) with kindness and beneficence, (and follow the path of him who repenteth unto me) the religion of him who betakes himself to me and obeys me, i.e. muhammad (pbuh). (then unto me will be your return) and the return of your parents, (and i shall tell you what ye used to do) of good or evil.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : but if they urge you to ascribe to me as partner that whereof you have no knowledge, that accords with [any] reality, then do not obey them. and keep them company in this world honourably, in other words, with decency: dutifulness and kindness — and follow the way of him who returns to me [in penitence], with [acts of] obedience. then to me will be your return, and i will inform you of what you used to do, and requite you for it (the [entire] sentence containing the ‘enjoinder’ [verse 14] and what comes after it constitutes a parenthetical statement).

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi

تفسير : (but if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto me as partner…) [31:15]. this was revealed about sa‘d ibn abi waqqas as mentioned before in surah al-‘ankabut [29:8]. (…and follow the path of him who repenteth unto me…) [31:15]. this verse was revealed about abu bakr, may allah be well pleased with him. ‘ata’ reported that ibn ‘abbas said: “this refers to abu bakr, may allah be well pleased with him. when the latter embraced islam, ‘abd al-rahman ibn ‘awf, sa‘d ibn abi waqqas, sa‘id ibn zayd, ‘uthman, talhah and al-zubayr went to him and said: ‘did you believe in muhammad and adopt his message?’ and when he said that he did they all went to the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, and declared their faith in him and believed in his message. and so, allah, exalted is he, addressing sa‘d, said (…and follow the path of him who repenteth unto me…), i.e. abu bakr, may allah be well pleased with him”.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : …and follow the way of him who returns to me [in penitence]…this means that anyone who has not been guided to the path [that leads] to god, mighty and majestic is he, should follow in the footsteps of the virtuous (ṣāliḥūn), so that the blessing (baraka) of following them may lead him to the path of god. do you not see how the dog of the companions of the cave benefitted by following those virtuous ones, to the point that god, exalted is he, repeatedly mentioned it in a good light? indeed, the prophet <img border="0" src="images/salatonmassenger.jpg" width="24" height="22"> said in a ḥadīth in this regard, ‘anyone who keeps their company will not be among the wretched.’ his words:
