Tafseer
'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī
تفسير : (the chiefs among them) among the quraysh: 'utbah and shaybah the sons of rabi'ah, ubayy ibn khalaf al-jumahi and abu jahl ibn hisham (go about, exhorting) abu jahl said to them: (go) to your deities (and be staunch to your gods) and persevere in the worship of your deities! (lo! this) meaning muhammad (pbuh) (is a thing designed) to perish; it is also said that this means: that which muhammad is saying is designed to spread to all people of the earth.
Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī
تفسير : and the council from among them go about, from the place of their assembly at the house of abū tālib and [the place] where they heard the prophet (s) say, ‘say: there is no god except god’, saying, ‘go!, they say to one another, go, and stand by your gods, adhere firmly to worship of them; lo! this, that has been mentioned concerning the oneness of god, is indeed a thing sought, from us.
Sahl al-Tustari
تفسير : …‘walk away! and stand by (iṣbirū) your gods’… he said:this is the reprehensible form of forbearance (ṣabr), for which god has reprimanded the disbelievers.indeed, i heard him [sahl] say:forbearance (ṣabr) is on four levels: forbearance in obedience (ṭāʿa), forbearance with suffering(alam), forbearance with pain (taʾallum), and lastly, the reprehensible kind of forbearance, which is that of persistence (iqāma) in opposing [the truth] (mukhālafa). his words:
