38 - Sad

قَالَ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ وَہَبْ لِيْ مُلْكًا لَّا يَنْۢبَغِيْ لِاَحَدٍ مِّنْۢ بَعْدِيْ۝۰ۚ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْوَہَّابُ۝۳۵
Qala rabbi ighfir lee wahab lee mulkan la yanbaghee liahadin min baAAdee innaka anta alwahhabu

English

Ahmed Ali

Saying: "O Lord, forgive me, and give me such a dominion as none will merit after me. You are the great bestower."

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (he said: my lord! forgive me) my sin (and bestow on me sovereignty such shall not belong to any after me) it is also said that this means: that will not be taken from me as the first time. (lo! thou art the bestower) of sovereignty and prophethood to whomever you will.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : he said, ‘my lord! forgive me and grant me a kingdom that shall not belong to anyone after me, in other words, other than me (this [use of min ba‘dī to mean ‘other than me’] is similar to [q. 45:23] fa-man yahdīh min ba‘di’llāh, ‘who will guide him other than god?’). truly you are the bestower’.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : …‘o my lord! forgive me, and grant me a kingdom which shall not belong to anyone after me...’he said:god, exalted is he, inspired solomon to ask for a kingdom which would not be attainable by anyone after him, that he might shatter thereby the tyrants, the unbelievers, those who transgress against their lord, and those among jinn and men who claim to possess power by themselves. thus, the question was posed by solomon <img border="0" src="images/alyhialsalam.jpg" width="34" height="19">, in accordance with god’s choice for him, and not following his own choice for himself. his words:
