Verse. 493

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : allah then encouraged them to be steadfast in jihad and misfortunes, saying: (o ye who believe!) in muhammad and the qur'an. (endure) in jihad along with your prophet, (outdo all others in endurance) overwhelm and overcome your enemy, (be ready) along with your prophet for your enemy as long as they stand in wait to attack you; it is also said that this means: (endure) the performance of the obligations and the avoidance of transgressions, (outdo all others in endurance) overwhelm and overcome the partisans of deviant beliefs and blameworthy innovations, (be ready) with your horses for the sake of allah, (and observe your duty to allah) obey allah in that which he has commanded you, such that you never abstain from it, (in order that ye may succeed) in order that you be saved from allah's wrath and punishment'.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : o you who believe, be patient, in [performing] acts of obedience, in the face of afflictions and in refraining from acts of disobedience, and vie in patience, with the disbelievers, lest they be more patient than you; be steadfast, persist in the struggle; fear god, in all of your circumstances, so that you will prosper, [so that] you will win [admittance to] paradise and be delivered from the fire.

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi

تفسير : (o ye who believe! endure, outdo all others in endurance…) [3:200]. sa‘id ibn abi ‘amr al-hafiz informed us> abu ‘ali al-faqih> muhammad ibn mu‘adh al-malini> al-husayn ibn al-hasan ibn harb al-maruzi> ibn al-mubarak> mus‘ab ibn thabit ibn ‘abd allah ibn al-zubayr> dawud ibn salih who reported that abu salamah ibn ‘abd al-rahman said: “o my nephew, do you know the occasion of this verse (o ye who believe! endure, outdo all others in endurance…)”. “no!” he answered. he said: “at the time of the prophet, allah bless him and give him peace, there were no ongoing military conquests in which one could engage. we only had to wait for the next prayer after performing the present one”. narrated by al-hakim abu ‘abd allah in his sahih from abu muhammad al-muzani> ahmad ibn najdah> sa‘id ibn mansur> ibn al-mubarak.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : o you who believe, be patient, and vie in patience; be steadfast and fear god that you may prosper.he said:faith has four pillars. the first is trust (tawakkul) in god, the second is complete submission (istislām) to his commands, the third is being content and satisfied (riḍā) with what he has preordained (qaḍāʾihi), and the fourth is gratitude (shukr) for his blessings along with mindfulnessof him (taqwā).a section on faithcertainty (yaqīn) is the heart of faith, patience (ṣabr) is the backbone of faith, and sincerity (ikhlāṣ) is the perfection of faith, for through sincerity the servant reaches true affirmation (taṣdīq). furthermore,through true affirmation he attains realisation (taḥqīq), and through realisation he reaches god (al-Ḥaqq). sincerity is the fruit of certainty, for certainty is witnessing (mushāhada) in the innermostsecret (sirr). moreover, whoever does not experience witnessing in [his] innermost secret in the presence of his lord ⸢and does not behold him⸣, has not made his actions sincere. but god knows best.sahl was asked about his words:
