So destroyed were the Thamud by a storm of thunder and lightning;

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī
تفسير : (as for thamud, they were destroyed by the lightning) they were destroyed because of their transgression and idolatry; and it is said that their transgression drove them to disbelieve until they were destroyed.
Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī
تفسير : as for thamūd, they were destroyed by the [overwhelming] roar, an excessively severe cry.
