Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : allah will say to them: (eat) of the fruits (and drink) from the rivers (at ease) fearing no sickness or death (for that which ye sent on before you) for that which you did of righteous works; and it is also said this means: for the fasting and prayers you offered, (in past days) i.e. in the days of the life of the world.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : and so it will be said to them: ‘eat and drink in enjoyment (hanī’an is a circumstantial qualifier, that is to say, mutahanni’īna, ‘while you are enjoying [them]’) for what you did in advance in former days’, [in days] that have passed during the [life of the] world.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : ‘eat and drink in enjoyment [as a reward] for what you did formerly in days gone by.’this is referring to fasting during the month of ramadan and during the days of the full moon. it has been mentioned in a ḥadīth that on the day of reckoning, tables spread with food will be placed before those believers who devoted themselves to fasting (ṣawwām), from which they will eat. [others] will say, ‘o lord, people are standing for the reckoning who are not eating.’ they will be told, ‘[these people] used to fast at length during the life of the world, while you ate your fill, and they would stay up at night in prayer while you took your rest.’
