Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (but be patient) o muhammad, in the face of their harm (with a patience fair to see) i.e. without anguish or display of indecency; and it is also said this means: stay away from them and show no anguish or indecency. later, he was commanded to fight them.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : so be patient — this was [revealed] before he [the prophet] was commanded to fight — with a graceful patience, that is, one in which there is no anguish.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : so be patient with comely patience (ṣabran jamīlan).that is, [with] contentment (riḍā) and without complaining (shakwā); for truly, complaints are a [form of] tribulation (balwā), and any claim to patience (ṣabr) that is accompanied by it [complaint] is merely a claim. [this notwithstanding], god, exalted is he, has servants who complain through him, from him and to him (bihi minhu ilayhi), as a proof of their restrainingtheir natural self (nafs al-ṭabʿ) from turning its attention to anything other than the one for whose sake the patient show patience. his words, exalted is he:
