Mosques are essential to the Muslim world, providing them a place to worship following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). Muslims gather five times daily to offer their obligatory prayers in congregation, and it becomes a place where they meet their neighbours and people living nearby five times a day. This creates a strong bond of brotherhood and a strong support system. Mosques also serve as educational institutions providing Islamic and Quran teachings to Muslim kids and adults. Many mosques have special programs for the youth to guide them to the right path and stay connected to their religion. Kazan, being a place where Muslims are in large numbers, also has several mosques to cater to the religious needs of Muslims.
Kul Sharif Mosque is one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in Russia and is named after the last Imam of Kazan, Kul Sharif, who sacrificed his life to save this palace from the invaders. The Muslim offers five times salah, Friday sermon, Jumu'ah prayer, Taraweeh prayers, and two Eid prayers. It also has a museum on its ground floor, the Museum of Islam. The mosque is open for everyone to visit and also provides free scarves and caps outside the mosque, as without them entry is banned. The original mosque was destroyed after the fall of the Soviet Union and was rebuilt by collecting donations from 40 thousand people. The Iranian government gifted the beautiful carpets in the mosque. The mosque can hold around 10 thousand people in the square in front of the mosque.
