Donetsk is a city in Ukraine known for contributing to its economy. It was founded in 1869 by a Welsh businessman, John Huges, who was producing iron rails for the growing rail network of Russia. The city was producing ironworks at that time, and even today it is an important industrial city in Ukraine. It's not a very big city in terms of population, and only 882,209 people currently reside here. Most of these are Eastern Orthodox, and Muslims are in the minority, making up only 0.4% of the total population. This small Muslim community mainly includes Tatars, who have been part of the Soviet Union for centuries. The Tatars settled here many years back, while in recent years, people from around the world, including central Asia, the Middle East, and other parts of the Muslim world, moved here for work and studies. We at Muslim and Quran have compiled information that will help our Muslim brothers and sisters living in Donetsk. Let's go through the article to see what facilities Donetsk has to offer its Muslim community.
Mosques are central places for worship, education, and religious gatherings for Muslims. They are important for Muslims as the main purpose of a mosque is to provide a place for the five congregational prayers. Mosques also act as educational centres, where kids and adults learn about the Quran, Hadith, and other Islamic teachings. The majority of the mosques run Madrasahs, where kids learn to recite the Quran and memorize it, as well as learn Arabic and Islamic history. Many mosques, especially in non-Muslim countries, also provide a space to celebrate events like Eid gatherings and Nikkah functions. It also helps the community people with financial help, religious counselling, and helping the newly reverts learn more about Islam and get their life according to the teachings of Islam.
Ahat Jami Mosque, also known as Akhat-Dzhami, is a big mosque in in Donetsk and was made open to the public on September 3, 1999. The main financial contributor was an entrepreneur and former president of Shakhtar Donetsk Football Club - Akhat Bragin. He died in 1995, and the mosque was named in his honour. There are two minarets, and one of them is named in honour of Rinat Akhmetov - a Ukrainian businessman. Ahat Jami Mosque accommodates around 700 worshippers to pray in the mosque at once and offer their congregational prayers. Muslims can pray five times daily prayers, but the majority show up together in Friday prayers from all around Donetsk and surrounding areas. The best part about this mosque is that there is a University founded for the Muslim community. It is the only Islamic education institution in the city of Donetsk providing courses in Arabic language and the Quran.

Islam came to Ukraine through Tatars during the 13th to 15th centuries, when Ukraine was ruled by a Mongol-Tatar state and later Islam was spread by the influence of the Ottoman Empire. When the rule of the Soviet Union started and industrial expansion began, many Muslims migrated to the Donetsk region for coal mining and metallurgy jobs from Central Asia and countries close to Ukraine, like Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Islam began to rise in Ukraine after its independence in 1991.
Ahat Jami Mosque, which is the largest mosque in Donetsk, was built and made accessible to the public in 1999. The first Islamic University came into being and is located inside the mosque on its first floor. Besides this mosque, there are several other small musallahs built to cater to the needs of the Muslim community, but their information is not readily available due to the ongoing conflicts in the country. Though there are many Muslims still living in Donetsk, due to conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, since 2014, there has been a decline in the number of migrants. Donetsk attracted Muslim migrants due to its industrial economy but now people are less likely to move here and prefer other safer cities of Ukraine like Kyiv, Khariv, or Odesa.
In the late 1980s, a Tatar organization known as 'Star of the Prophet' represented the Muslim community in Donetsk and, for a long time, served as the support system of Donetsk Muslims. Ahat Jami Mosque was also built by this organization in 1999, as the first mosque with minarets in Donetsk to offer its Muslim community to offer their prayers in congregation in a proper mosque rather than small apartments or houses that are converted into mosques. Today, the Religious Administration of Muslims of Ukraine Ummah, which was founded in 2008, is working hard to review Islamic cultural and historical values and take educational initiatives.
