٣٨ - ص

38 - Sad

وَمَا يَنْظُرُ ہٰۗؤُلَاۗءِ اِلَّا صَيْحَۃً وَّاحِدَۃً مَّا لَہَا مِنْ فَوَاقٍ۝۱۵
Wama yanthuru haolai illa sayhatan wahidatan ma laha min fawaqin

English

Ahmed Ali

They await but a single blast which will not be repeated.

15

وَقَالُوْا رَبَّنَا عَجِّلْ لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ۝۱۶
Waqaloo rabbana AAajjil lana qittana qabla yawmi alhisabi

Ahmed Ali

Still they say: "O Lord, give us our share before the Day of Reckoning."

16

اِصْبِرْ عَلٰي مَا يَقُوْلُوْنَ وَاذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوٗدَ ذَا الْاَيْدِ۝۰ۚ اِنَّہٗۗ اَوَّابٌ۝۱۷
Isbir AAala ma yaqooloona waothkur AAabdana dawooda tha alaydi innahu awwabun

Ahmed Ali

Bear with patience what they say, and remember Our votary David, man of strength. He surely turned to Us in penitence.

17

اِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا الْجِبَالَ مَعَہٗ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالْاِشْرَاقِ۝۱۸ۙ
Inna sakhkharna aljibala maAAahu yusabbihna bialAAashiyyi waalishraqi

We subjugated the chiefs (of tribes) to struggle day and night with him,

18

وَالطَّيْرَ مَحْشُوْرَۃً۝۰ۭ كُلٌّ لَّہٗۗ اَوَّابٌ۝۱۹
Waalttayra mahshooratan kullun lahu awwabun

Ahmed Ali

And the levied Tair. They were all obedient to him.

19

وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَہٗ وَاٰتَيْنٰہُ الْحِكْمَۃَ وَفَصْلَ الْخِطَابِ۝۲۰
Washadadna mulkahu waataynahu alhikmata wafasla alkhitabi

Ahmed Ali

So We further strengthened his kingdom, and bestowed wisdom on him, and judgement in legal matters.

20

وَہَلْ اَتٰىكَ نَبَؤُا الْخَصْمِ۝۰ۘ اِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا الْمِحْرَابَ۝۲۱ۙ
Wahal ataka nabao alkhasmi ith tasawwaroo almihraba

Have you heard of the litigants who jumped over the wall into his chamber?

21

اِذْ دَخَلُوْا عَلٰي دَاوٗدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْہُمْ قَالُوْا لَا تَخَفْ۝۰ۚ خَصْمٰنِ بَغٰى بَعْضُنَا عَلٰي بَعْضٍ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَنَا بِالْحَــقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَاہْدِنَاۗ اِلٰى سَوَاۗءِ الصِّرَاطِ۝۲۲
Ith dakhaloo AAala dawooda fafaziAAa minhum qaloo la takhaf khasmani bagha baAAduna AAala baAAdin faohkum baynana bialhaqqi wala tushtit waihdina ila sawai alssirati

Ahmed Ali

When they came before David, he was frightened of them. "Do not be afraid," they said. "The two of us are disputing the wrong one has done the other. So judge between us with equity, and do not be unjust, and guide us to the right path.

22

اِنَّ ھٰذَاۗ اَخِيْ۝۰ۣ لَہٗ تِسْعٌ وَّتِسْعُوْنَ نَعْجَۃً وَّلِيَ نَعْجَۃٌ وَّاحِدَۃٌ۝۰ۣ فَقَالَ اَكْفِلْنِيْہَا وَعَزَّنِيْ فِي الْخِطَابِ۝۲۳
Inna hatha akhee lahu tisAAun watisAAoona naAAjatan waliya naAAjatun wahidatun faqala akfilneeha waAAazzanee fee alkhitabi

Ahmed Ali

This man here is my brother. He has ninety and nine ewes while I have only one. He demands that I should give him my ewe, and wants to get the better of me in argument."

23

قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ اِلٰى نِعَاجِہٖ۝۰ۭ وَاِنَّ كَثِيْرًا مِّنَ الْخُلَطَاۗءِ لَيَبْغِيْ بَعْضُہُمْ عَلٰي بَعْضٍ اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ وَقَلِيْلٌ مَّا ہُمْ۝۰ۭ وَظَنَّ دَاوٗدُ اَنَّمَا فَتَنّٰہُ فَاسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّہٗ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَّاَنَابَ۝۲۴۞
Qala laqad thalamaka bisuali naAAjatika ila niAAajihi wainna katheeran mina alkhulatai layabghee baAAduhum AAala baAAdin illa allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati waqaleelun ma hum wathanna dawoodu annama fatannahu faistaghfara rabbahu wakharra rakiAAan waanaba

Ahmed Ali

(David) said: "He is unjust in demanding your ewe to add to his (many) ewes. Many partners are surely -- unjust to one another, except those who believe and do the right; but there are only a few of them." It occurred to David that he was being tried by Us, and he begged his Lord to forgive him, and fell down in homage and repented.
